I’m looking for ideas on fishing with the kids (they’re young) from the beach at one of the inlets. Any suggestions on what to fish for and how? It’s all sand and obviously a lot of current. Figured it’d be a way to introduce the kids to fishing and give me a chance to fish. Thanks!
If you want to introduce the kids to fishing, and fish at the same time, carry a bucket of mud minnows out to Jason’s Lake at Botany Bay Plantation out on way to Edisto. It’s a kids only, catch and release only, fishing pond with a LOT of good fish in it. We caught 4 in the first 10 minutes we were there last time…
Otherwise, any of the inlets on a bottom rig with enough weight to hold the bait on the bottom, shrimp/cut mullet/cut bait fish/squid, whatever…you’ll catch something!
I think you could do as well just fishing in the surf at any local beach. You don’t need an inlet, and besides those currents create drop off and rips that make them totally unsafe to wade or swim. Here’s what you need: 2 7’ spin casting rods(reel on the bottom with a bail wire and a handle) spooled up with 15lb. test. A couple of double hook store bought bottom fishing rigs for each rod…spares.
1/0 Kale red bleeder hooks…funny bend in them…ask if you’re not sure. Half a dozen 3oz. pyramid sinkers. 2 surf spikes…I like the aluminum ones with a long spike on them. A little pricey, but worth it.
A pair of needle nose pliers and a sharp but cheap filet knife.
Now read the tide chart on this site and pick out low tides that occur early in the morning…you gotta get up early!! You’ll have more beach to yourself before the day trippers crowd you out, and the fish bite better before the sun gets high in the sky. Look the beach over at dead low tide, and look for waves breaking just off the beach into what is relatively calm water…there’s a slew there. Set up there. Space your surf spikes about 50 yards apart. Work 'em deep into the sand approximately 10 yards above the wet water mark on the beach. Be prepared to re set your surf spikes as the tide comes in.
Now with the surf spike in place, put your rod in it and rig up. Easy peasy with the rod in the surf spike. Once you’ve got your rigs fitted with hooks and sinker, bait each hook with a thumbnail size piece of peeled shrimp…I buy fresh at the market on the way to the beach…never frozen!! You should get at least 2 pieces of bait from each medium sized shrimp.
All set. Now cast your rig into the foam of the breaking waves off the beach. Reel in slack until tight on the reel, and put it in the surf spike. Check your drag…medium tight is good. Too tight and something big will yank your rod out of the holder, and good bye fishing gear! Now watch your rod tips, really pay attention!!, and when it yanks down hard…not bouncing
