Inline Planer tuning

Last season I decided to invest in an inline planer setup for the boat (Avet ProEX 50/2 & Pinnacle Elim 100S).

Only got one trip out last season (fell off the top of the boat at the ramp and smashed my right arm/wrist - bones poking out where they should not be etc). The rig seemed to run well though I have a couple of questions.

I am ‘pretty’ sure it worked, pulled it up at one point and could see a large ‘shadow’ in the water where the lure should have been and a whole lot of weight on the line (planer already off) but handed it to a first time blue water crew member to finish off - only to turn around and see the rod back in the holder and the guy having a smoke - so not a confirmed.

What puzzled me, is this the way they actually work? As in they are a pure ‘meat rod’ and unless something is huge you won’t know it’s there until you check? Is it possible that I am running too fast and putting so much pressure on the planer that it can’t trip?

Looking for some of the finer pointers in getting this setup right.

If the planer was set correctly, then the rod would be bent over pretty hard. When the fish hits, the planer will trip and the rod should snap upwards. If a fish is on there then after the snap up, you will see the rod tighten back down. Sometimes fish pull drag and sometimes they don’t but the angle on the line will usually change as the fish gets pulled towards the surface. When planer is set, the line is usually running pretty deep unless you let too much mainline out.
