I have a friend that wants to build me a rod at cost and I would like to have a 12wt, but upon looking at 12 wt reels aren’t reasonable (atleast not on my budget) Is it feasible to land a large fish on a 12wt rod paired with an 11wt reel ??? It seems that the 11wt reels are drastically less expensive, probably can feasible spend $100 on a reel and in the 12wt reels that’s just not happening. I want this for surf and I would like to feed it to Tarpon or Cobia some day
Thanks everyone

There isn’t really a difference between an 11 and 12 reel… they just don’t rate the cheaper reels that high… save your money. Don’t go cheap on a big reel it will bite you in the ass… cobia, tarpon, AJ’s etc… will break or melt a cheap reel… I’ve seen it first hand… just save some pennies and get something with a solid drag…

I just bought an Okuma SLV 10/11 for my 12wt… gonna see what happens when a cobe or a reef donkey gets on it… the reel was $70 and the lighter versions, ( I now own all in the family ) are solid drags and have held up to everything up to about a 20lb redfish… if it goes south then I am out $70 if it holds and doesn’t melt I am set… either way I am gonna have fun testing it out…

Mike saving money means not fishing now haha (I want to play with some of those surf fish), I can spend the $70, burn the drag and save for the more expensive one …

I just bought a 11-12wt STH Turbine off ebay brand new for 185$. Its originally 450$ but its a close out on the reel. Read some reviews and people seem to enjoy them. The guy still had 7 left.

you DO NOT want to go for that STH… they use an old school gear driven disc brake system that will be eaten alive by salt… no bueno… I like STH reels, I’ve had a little 4wt for years, but they are a freshwater company, and that is a freshwater reel…
