Inshore 6/14/08

Headed south around Indigo caught a few Triggers and other bottom dwellers no Groupers and a decent king on light tackle w/ butter fly jig which was bit in half by a shark, went ahead and fed him the rest of it.
Dropped outriggers and headed to the Cammanche, few cuda and a reef donkey was all we could get trolling.
saw a white Hospital ship heading north as we went past her a few miles inshore we saw alot of trash she dumped that had spread out over a mile,it was sickening, took some pics of all the trash but i doubt anything can be done about it.
Congrats to Daniel and brucie on all the Bugs and huge caberra they got diving glad someone did good.

that sucks about the trash…saw that hospital ship too. Was that a red cross ship or something?

Was’nt flying a flag,not sure.

Hospital ship or not something should be done about it. The quicker those photos get public the better the chance of pulling the right strings.

I have a pic of the ship and trash, try and post later.
Someone told me that they issue permits to boats that can dump trash legally?
is that true?

There are rules about what you can dump in the ocean. You are legally allowed to dump food, wood, tile, glass, metal etc at certain distances from the shoreline. No plastic anywhre though.

Garbage Type Discharge

Plastics – includes synthetic ropes, fishing nets, and plastic bags Prohibited in all areas.

Floating dunnage, lining and packing materials Prohibited less than 25 miles from nearest land

Food waste, paper, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery and similar refuse Prohibited less than 12 miles from nearest land

Comminuted or ground food waste, paper, rags, glass, etc. Prohibited less than 3 miles from nearest land.

google is pretty neat

That’s the USN Hospital Ship “Comfort”. She’s been here for an exercise with other services. Sickening about the trash, though. I wonder if getting the newspaper to publish some photos would be enough to let the Navy know we don’t like them dumping in our waters? Those are our tax dollars at work and we can let them know we don’t like it. Not dumping waste near our shores should be a no brainer.

Send the pictures ito the Post & Courier. Those ships are not supposed to be duming plastic anywhere in the ocean. IT is suposed to be transfered to another ship for disposal or kept until thhey get back to shore. In 2002 there was a mised transfer that washed up all over Debredua (SP?). The Navy was found responsible and cleaned it up. That ship should not be dumping there. Send the pics to a news station or paper!

If the trash truly came form a Navy ship, whatever crewman dumped that trash will get in serious trouble if/when the Captain/Navy finds out. You may think I am full of crap but it is a big deal if trash is dumped that is not supposed to be dumped or it if is dumped in the wrong place. Most sailors have resepct for the sea and only the bad apples do crap like that. This will be investigated because it makes the Navy look real bad. Do you have the pics?

A trash line can be a great place to fish, just like a weed line. We worked one last year offshore of the edisto banks and caught over a dozen dolphin off of it. Like skinnee said, you are allowed to dump some stuff offshore. Plastic is bad, but paper will fall apart in a short amount of time. And who doesn’t look forward to finding some floating wood offshore and catching dolphin from it? It does take away from the beauty of the ocean when you see a big dumpster full of sh*t out there though.

We passed a couple miles behind that ship on our way in and saw several floating styrofoam cups making a paper trail to the ship. I’m sure the turtle lovers would like to get their hands on those pictures.
