Hey y’all, I’m lookin at a new combo. The st croix mojo inshore rod.
Here’s the specs: MIS70MF 7’ M Fast 1 8 - 17 3/8 - 3/4 4.9 1 $ 120. Any other rod recommendations?
I think a penn battle or fierce 2000 or 3000 would be a great combo for that. Or even an okuma avenger in that same size, more drag and a little cheaper. Whatcha think? I’m open to any suggestions reel and rod wise as well.
Another question, right now I have a 2500 reel, I’m debating bewtween a 2000 and 3000 reel, I know its not a huge difference but for trout and slot redfish and occasional drag busteing overslot red is a 2000 enough or should I go 3? Tryin to figure this all out! Thanks
I hav 3 setups with similar rod all battle 3000 w 20# braid and a 4th on a 7’6" rod that I use for deep pop cork
I can handle anything inshore with um
So far they are bulletproof
Most of my buddy’s leave thier stuff at home when they show up to meet me now if that tells ya anything

As far as the 2000 vs 3000 I wondered the same and went with the 3000 figuring the extra 1.5 oz was worth it for the few trips a year to Florida now I’m covered for canal tarpon and snook
3000 is better as an all around reel. 2000 size reels gets overpowered reel quick with a large red near structure. The Mojo is a nice rod as are all St. Croix rods. My only complaints is the split grip (I consider an unnecessary fad in most applications) doesn’t allow the rod to be fished from a rod holder very well and also makes the rod tip heavy with the blanks they use.
When I bought my Battle 3000, I was also going to buy the Mojo Inshore. However, Scott at Hadrells pointed me to the Star Rod. He had nothing bad to say about the Mojo. The warranty process is easier with the Star rod. He can hand you a replacement Star rod right off the floor under warranty (with your Hadrell’s receipt!). The Mojo has to be returned and wait for warranty replacement. Not a huge deal but I’m very pleased with the decision (and no need for warranty use at this point!). Verify with Hadrells that none of that has changed. I’ll be at Folly this weekend, give me a shout if you want to borrow for a trial.
I fish St Croix as well. I believe its a tide master series (No issues). The other rod I go to is the falcon inshore series. Good rod and decent price. As for the size of the reel for me its what application I’m using that day. Back in the day I had a penn 103C (silver). They have come along ways since then.
Yeah I like light tackle but a 2000 may be to small, at least ill regret it when I lost a giant redfish on some oysters. I think a battle 3000 would be good but looking at a fierce cause its cheaper although if I get a really good quality rod I think ill regret not having a nice reel. What is shimanos eqivelent to the battle?
Hairball- I would get the avid if I had the money but I don’t. I kinda like those “bass handles” is what I call them, because freshwater spinnin rods do that. My dad used to have one and it fit in the holder good. But I would probably be actively fishing this one though. Something else to look into…
Downlow- I have thought about star rods and I like them but my phone was acting up not letting me on there site. What rods do they have around that price range? I like the idea of gettin one off the floor, I didn’t know that was an option haha. I’m going to HPT soon to talk to scott.
Thanks y’all, keep the respones coming! Last thing I wanna do is buy some high end gear and not like it!
Price range wise your Shimano equivalent would probably be a Symetre, unless you find Saros on sale. Check out the differnet rods in the store considering price, warranty and feel. It is your rod so take everyone’s advice but make your own decision. Lots of good info on here to get you started in your search and obviously lots of help and info available at our local shops.
Good luck finding Scott by the way, deer season starts tomorrow so i would not be suprised if he had taken the rest of the week off.
I have the Star Stellar Lite (I think!) with split grip. Runs about $100, slightly lower than the Mojo price. I also have a Penn Fierce combo. The reel is great for the price but a little disappointed that I already had to have a guide replaced on the Fierce rod, has been fine other than that. That Fierce combo was only around $80.
Tommy- I’ve decided on the okuma trio 4000 for my dock fishing and sheepshead, paired with an ugly stik lite. That’s I didn’t post that question.
I like the stellar lites at the same-ish price a little cheaper I think.
What about penn legion rods? I’m not sure if that would just saw it on another thread and getting opinions.
As for reels, penn battle 3000 or symetre 3000? Trying different opinions.
For rods its come down to this:
Star stellar lite?
St croix mojo inshore?
Any other suggestions?
As fofr scott, he’s hopeless with these deer with the bow!

I have to agree with Too Busy here. I have two Okuma Avengers and I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.
But I also think to each their own. My buddy in Florida sticks to his Penn Reels…which for the most part serve him well.
To put this into perspective. This past weekend I was in St. Pete Florida for a wedding and managed to get in some fishing. I wasn’t looking for any Shark, as I was fishing from a Pier, but I hooked into a big one. My ABF 65 took off screaming. I stopped the bait feeding and the drag was still screaming…once the fish stopped, and I tried to turn it…I suffered the ultimate indignity as the 1/0 circle hook broke.
But again, I wasn’t looking for a Shark, but my 50# fluoro leader was all tore up and again the dang hook broke.
I 3rd Okuma and the Trio and Trio S reels. Up grade to their EVX or Citrix rods for an otc replacement. The S model looks killer on a Citrix rod- orange trim on both. The 6’6" rods are available with 7 3/4" split grips- great for kayak fishing!
Too Busy uses the Reflection rod with a Trio 20 for his guide service if I remember correctly.
Thanks, ill look at the teremar, shimano right?
Remo300-I’m suprised by that. My okuma avenger 3000 sucked! I caught one giant mangrove snapper ok it in FL and a couple small reds. One keeper trout herwas done. Just completely crapped out on me. I was gonna get it worked on but I just didn’t even want another one I had it for like 2 weeks…
The Okuma Avenger is the Trio’s cheaper little cousin. I have 2 that I bought reeel cheap and I must say, for the money they are good little reels. I do love my Battle though.
I just broke in my new battle 3000 on a 7’ xtra fast action legion rod, I pulled a 27in red out of the structure with it. It has plenty of back bone to fight a big fish and is sensitive enough to feel everything.
Thanks y’all, I will look at the teremar with symetre 3000 on it. Anybody on here use one personally?
Also the star rod’s warranty is looking better, a star stellar lite with penn battle 3000. Who on here’s got one?
St. Croix mojo inshore with battle 3000, or symetre 3000. Who’s got one?
What are the differences between symetre and battle of same size?
Sorry for all the questions but so much stufff is similarily priced, and this will be my first buy of anything over 50$ a piece haha all my combos are under $80. My dad keeps syaing that it ain’t the arrows its the indian, but my philosphy is that it takes a good indian but the difference between a good and a great indian are the quality of his arrows
Dfreedom, I paid $20 for mine, actually it was 20 and I got it as a present for my bday. I wouldn’t take one if somebody gave it away. Unless I got a bigger avenger baitfeeder int the 6500 size, ffor redfish and tarpon. Id give that a try.
My avengers have taken a beating. Huge Ray’s, several sharks, had one fall in the suds once.
Good maintenance, immediate rinsing and they are still like new.
(Whereas my buddy’s Penn had his anti-reverse break on him Saturday because of a 3.5 foot bonnethead…)
