I just moved to the Columbia area from the Gulf Shores, AL for my job and my boat is currently at home. I travel a lot to the Charleston & Georgetown area for work and would love to hear if anyone has any locations for inshore fishing for reds, flounder, specks. I’m not much of a beach fishing , so any backwater foot accessible locations would be great if anyone has any pointers.
My oldest son lived down there for 9 years with no boat. He ended up learning to surf fish as there seem to be more places to do that than inshore from the shore. There are several piers (Pitt St., Mount Pleasant, Folly) you can try. He also fished at Breach Inlet between Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island. Hopefully some locals (I’m in Columbia) will chime in.
I used to do a good bit of kayak fishing down there as it was easy to drag one down there and go by myself.
Thank you. I typically stay in the Mount Pleasant area so I may give that a try. Most of the places I’ve tried to visit, including the state parks do not like you fishing from the banks, which I think is odd. Do you have any suggestions for the Columbia area? I’ve not had much luck here in the rivers at all since it’s mostly just muddy stained water.
I have lived in Columbia a long time and have only fished freshwater maybe2-3 times. Just never really go into it but I keep thinking I should since it seems to be so hard to get down to the coast anymore.
I see folks fishing the Saluda River all around the zoo area and they seem to catch fish (mostly stripers). I also know that further upriver, near the ■■■■, folks fish (some fly fish) for trout. I have kayaked the Congaree a bit and have seen folks’ fish/catch just below the Blossom Street bridge (again, mostly stripers) but I have no idea what kind of rigs, bait, etc. There are a few guys from Columbia on CF, hopefully they will come along and have something to add.
Sadly, this forum does not get the traffic that it used to.
Lake Murray is west of Columbia and has a variety of freshwater fishing opportunities . It has largemouth and striped bass, assorted panfish and several species of catfish, including some very big blues and flatheads. There are several public landings.
Also, there’s Billy Dreher State Park but they do charge a small entry fee there. Numerous guides offer booked trips for stripers, catfish and white perch but it usually takes a few weeks or more to get a booking during the busy summer striper heyday.
Lake Monticello is a longer drive from Columbia but it also has some nice largemouth, catfish and panfish. I’m not certain but I think there’s at least one public pier there for fishing. I’ve seen several people fishing from the bank near one of the landings there. Good luck with your fishing.
The best place to fish from the bank around here is Fort Moultrie
Why did “dam” get blacked out?
My guess it was spelled right, just wrong context…4 black boxes d…a…m…n
The Columbia area, where DF was talking about, has an absolutely amazing fishery for Striper and Smallmouth!
