inshore...kind of

well i saw the wind tuesday and wednesday, and it was looking good for offshore, but my fiance and 16month old were flying back home Tuesday afternoon after being in Colombia for 3 weeks, so i knew Wednesday was going to have to be a “spend time with family day”. So i held out hope for a quick nearshore Tues AM trip which would be my only opportunity in the next 2weeks to fish. woke up at 3AM to do my East Coast WIndAlert forecasts and was eye balling the local radar on the side, felt good about storms staying well offshore and inland. well when i walked outside to load up wouldnt you know it was F(&%* raining! well not to be deterred i packed the slicker and headed out. met up with 1 willing crew at the dock and rolled out. intermittent showers and a pretty flat ocean greeted us out to around 50ft. lots of pods of bait up top but the clouds made it tough to see under the surface. after prospecting a couple pods of bait we eased up to another that had fish marked under it. boom! there they were outta no where, right under the transom, 3-4 brown fish one large female with 2-3 decent sized males following. at the ready live pogie on 7/0 live bait J was pitched and inhaled. Fight was on, kept her in the water for a bit trying to lure the followers. Finally got her gaffed and boxed @ ~45lb, just before one of the smaller fish came back and ate another pogie we had rigged for big spanish on a 14lb main line. buddy fought him for a while, patiently wearing down the fish on the light tackle, gloved up and wrestled him in the boat b/c we werent sure if he was gonna keep. 2nd fish ended up going 36". packed it up shortly there after ran back through the rain on a slick ocean and were back in by 1030 with a box full of terds. Great Success!
