I have a Grady White that won’t let me get as skinny as I would like and I get tired of fishing the same docks and spots. Plus, I can’t trade it in b/c it is a good family boat. So, has anyone with a similar issue or just for the heck of it, ever tried floating a kite with live shrimp, menhaden, or other live bait in the flats for reds? If so, was it worth the trouble?

Yes, I have the exact issue. It was a frustrating transition from a jon boat to a walkaround for me. My boat is a 20.7ft sea hunt walk around. I sold my jon boat to get this because the wife wanted more of a family boat. I found myself going to the same couple docks trip after trip that I knew held fish and were easy to get to. I promised myself this year I would not fish them in order to find new spots. Never tried kite fishing, but something that the guys on this site recommended and helped a lot was adding additional anchor chain. I now do not need to let out as much line to catch tight and it really eliminates sway. Buddy at work has same size boat and swears by the larger size cajun anchor(have not tried that yet). Also, if I am unsure of the depth of a spot I always read maps and check it out at dead low or early incoming firstthen fish the rest of incoming. That way if I do get stuck at least the tide is coming to the rescue me. I definitely miss that little jon boat and trolling motor most of all, but I try to concentrate on the things I can do now that I couldnt with my jon boat(cobia trips, jetty trips, tarpon, etc.).
