Anyone know how to get to all the wonderful Mt Pleasant fishing from Chas / N Chas without the frightening Ravenel and 526 bridges? Both these bridges scare the heck out of me. I have been on 20+ mile long bridges, but these are just TOO DARNED HIGH!
You could go by boat. However, without having to cross the bridges, take US highway 52 to SR 401 just past the tail race canal bridge. Turn right on 401 and continue to highway 41, turn right and stay on this road until it runs into US highway 17 in Mt. Pleasant. This will be the North end of Mt. Pleasant.

And almost an hour drive too…
maybe try focusing on the road and not on how high the bridge is…
when I was 7 I didn’t like crossing the original Cooper River Bridge either, but then again I was 7:yawning_face:

There is a people ferry that runs back and forth from CHS to MT P.
My hands sweat when I cross the bridge even though I don’t feel scared at all when driving, I know I would not feel comfortable walking it. I tried walking the Golden Gate on vacation and got about halfway before I had to turn around. Inside lane by the wall is better and the new bridge is so wide its not as bad. When I was a kid I was scared by any bridge I couldn’t see the other side of, even had a couple dreams where there was no other side to the Edisto bridge.
I’d like to recommend a book to you guys who are scared to cross the “tall bridge”… It’s about a train who crossed a large hill by thinking that he could…
If you have a boat, put it in at Wappoo cut and ride across the harbor.

I developed the fear of heights many years ago. I was working for a rural telephone company. Due to an equipment failure, I fell from most of the way up a 35 ft telephone pole. High places have been an issue since then. I am considering asking the MD for some ‘bridge pills’. I don’t normally use psychoactive meds, but there is so much wonderful stuff in Mt Pleasant that I am willing to do so. And BTW if I do get a boat, it will be a kayak. That crossing might not be fun in a yak!

OUCH! Sorry to hear that! Did you burn the pole on the way down or did you fall out of a bucket? I used to gaff poles in rear easements back in the day myself, only lost footing once, but it was scary as hell no doubt!

This telco was really budget. Equipment was (surplus) belt and spikes.
Belt broke. Fortunately I fell on my back / side and rolled. Even better luck, the landing spot was freshly plowed. No broken bones, but some epic bruises. We had another worker who was less fortunate. He was stringing wire across a road, and a pickup truck snagged the wire while he was climbing.

Brutal story… at least you’re ok I reckon!

I joked that it was my earlier martial arts training that saved me. The first thing they teach you (and teach you and teach you…) is how to fall. As a born klutz I had an advantage in those classes due to MANY MANY falls as part of routine life.

The Ramp from 26 to the cooper river bridge is what gets me. 2 lanes 3 decks up in a big arch.
So if you try the bridge, make sure to enter from down town, not 26.
