I’m looking for a good 4000 size spinning reel for fishing Reds/trout that will last a while, I hate having to replace reels after only a year or two. Anybody have suggestions for a pretty inexpensive reel that they really like?
Penn Fierce! Get them for about 50 bucks!
On the cheap, you can’t beat an Okuma avenger or trio. The drag isn’t going to stop a big bull red but they seem to hold up to the salt. I have a few on “buddy rods” and they still work great after 2 seasons. If drag is important get a Penn Battle. They are around $100 but have a nice drag and are well built with all metal construction.
If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.
Penns are nice, I have a mess of Battles.
I’m also a big fan of Shimano anything. There are a range of models for different price points.
The Shimanos are lighter weight than the Penn’s
I’d recommend going to Haddrell’s in West Ashley and asking for advice. Best in town.

Go with the most expensive Shimano you can afford.
Penn or Shimano. They hold up well if you clean and lube as needed. I have a penn. 4500ss that is now 15 years old. I’ve replaced a couple screws and the drag nob. Tear it down 1-2 times a year and this month I’ve caught the three biggest reds of my life on it 25.5" 27" & 28". There no real monsters but the fight pretty hard. Just saying buy quality and take care if it and it will last a lifetime.
I have had both Penn and Shimano and my Shimanos have lasted longer. I have one Shimano Stradic that is 6 years old and still feels new (they are about $200 but worth it). I also fish with a Sahara and Symetre…both are under $100 and have lasted 3+ years. I do spray them down with freshwater EVERY time im done fishing.
