Inshore Slam + Jack

I’m with you Harold, I’ll stay with a strong rod bender even though wasting valuable time. I have caught plenty of large spottails but never an inshore Jack. I wanna try! Thanks for posting FF.

No problem! We didn’t look at it as wasting valuable time because we allotted that hour to fishing for jacks. We knew after they went deep as the sun came up that we would still have plenty of inshore time. Both of us getting slams and tagging 30 reds is still a productive inshore trip after catching that big guy.

Have to admit, I don’t get the “wasted time” comments or when people refer to certain fish as “trash fish.” Granted, back when I use to fish bass tournaments, it was “wasted time” when weeding through stripers to get to the largemouth but when I’m not tournament fishing, I’m simply fishing. We hit the water with “hopes” but in the end, we’re looking for a stretch of the string. When I caught my jack, it took 30 minutes to land him. I didn’t consider one second of that fight to be “wasted.” That was the first fish of the day and it was a day makers for me. We went on to catch a few trout and some reds after that but I didn’t feel catching that jack took anything away from the rest of the fishing that day. Hell, one day last year me and a buddy got into an absolute ladyfish feeding frenzy. It was cast after cast of ladyfish blowing up on topwater baits and nonstop action for about 30 minutes and that was some great fun but some people actually consider ladyfish to be “trash fish” and that just blows my mind. Like I said, if you’re fishing tournaments or you’re a guide carrying customers, I get that time is money, but if you’re not doing either of those things, and you still feel catching “trash fish” is “wasted time,” you’re simply too busy to enjoy time on the water.

God bless the “ignore” function.

That was a big ass Jack! Bet he showed you some new line. I’m game for a smoking drag no matter what is biting. Thanks for the post.
I’ve never caught one.

Yes it was indeed. That fish was so strong and my heart was racing when he spun around for my lure and pushed a wall of water.
