Headed out with my buddy this morning at 5am to try and find the Jack Crevalle. Put in at Remley’s about 20 min before sunrise. Had my spinning outfit rigged with a Shimano Orca chugger. Went up the Cooper and found several schools of jacks as the sun was lighting the water. My buddy threw a long bomb but not taker. We got a little closer and I threw the Orca about 3 feet away, gave one large chug and had a jack turn hard for the lure. Chugged it again and the jack inhaled the lure and the fight was on. About 20 min and got him to the boat. Big boy weighed in at 32lbs.
Once we were done with the reviving, we looked around and the schools went deep so we decided to head up the Wando for reds/trout/flounder. Started out by throwing topwater along eddies, grass points and grass pockets. Picked up a few reds and some trout. Water was a little stained from all the runoff so we switched over to Zman Slimz and Pogy and we really got into them. Ended the day with 30 reds(all tagged), a handful of trout and a few flounder to round out the slam. Biggest red was 29". Off the water by 2:30. Amazing day on the water today.

Wow! What a great morning. Awesome photos!
How do you spot the Jacks? I’ve never fished for them before and know nothing about what you’d look for.
Nice work!

You just have to be out at sunrise. You’ll see schools with their dial and tail fins out of the water, they’ll be slowly cruising the channel

Thanks for that! I’d love to find them sometime. I’ve seen fish busting baitfish pretty hard on the surface in the harbor lately. My assumption is that those were Spanish. That was new to me as well.
MK, the push the Jacks create is unmistakable. Plus, if they’re shallow enough to create a push, as FF said, you’ll see their fins out of the water. INCREDIBLY powerful critter.

Great Day and timely report. Taking leave next week. My Son and I will be following the same game plan. Jacks early and inshore later in the morning. I usually use Zara Spooks but after looking at the Orca topwater bait may add a couple to the arsenal.

Great catch, few fish fight like a jack crevalle. did you approach the fish using the trolling motor or were the fish not spooked by the outboard?

We used the trolling motor. Definitely a strong fish.

We got on the jacks a few weeks ago and we had to use the TM to approach them. We followed one school that was hauling ass and I could only keep pace with the TM so I tried to use the big motor to gain ground but the minute I turned it on, the school broke up and/or went deep.

Do the schools typically show up near the shore or out in the channel?
The school we managed to catch one from was up shallow, looking for food. Those will be the easiest to catch, in my opinion. The school we found “hauling ass” was out a little deeper and appeared to simply be passing through. Not saying you can’t get that school to eat but the ones up shallow, actively hunting, are going to be your best bet. Like I said before, you can’t miss the push they create so if you have calm conditions, you can’t miss’em.

Caught mine to the edge of the channel. They were at the surface, water depth was about 30’

All of the Jacks I’ve caught have been in water 2-4’ deep. I’ve caught 'em on plastic under a popping cork and on top water plugs, such as a Top Dog. When they smash a top water plug, they create quite an explosion. I’m usually using light tackle and always have to chase the Jack with the trolling motor to keep the fish from spooling my reel. Their fight is different from a bull red in that the Jack runs much farther, whereas a bull will make a strong run, but will usually turn. I haven’t had to chase many bulls with the boat. When the trout bite is on or when I’m on a school of red fish, it is very frustrating to have to spend time chasing a big Jack. Lots of valuable fishing time is wasted once a Jack is hooked, but I haven’t had any friends who hooked a Jack and then wanted to pop him off and go back to catching trout or slot reds.
