I have to disagree some. In fact I believe it to be just the opposite in some cases. I think you need a more sensitive rod with bait, to feel a flounder or a sheepshead eating the bait. They will play with it before they gulp it down. I think if you are gonna do it right, you need multiple setups for different situations. Some lighter, some heavier.
I have an excess inventory of high end rods and probably need to reduce the stash (beware it can become a sickness) a bit. I am in Greenville. Send me a PM if you are interested. They are used but not abused. Most are not even smuged.
There is no such thing as too much gear! Or as my friend tells his bride when quizzed about his latest rod purchase “what about all those shoes in your closet”.
For you, I’d say something like a Shimano Teremar and a symetre 3000. Good all around, doesn’t break the bank. Holds up very well, and has caught plenty of fish for me! With braided line it runs about 220$. But you want something that’ll hold up. Their is no way you’ll get away with a 75$ combo and be happy. Especially living in the upstate where the rod will sit in a garage

You can buy the Penn Fierce 3000 combo at Sportsmans Warehouse in Columbia and also at the Angler for 79.99. I love mine.
Symetry isn’t worth the extra $20. It just has an extra bearing on the pinion instead of a bushing, otherwise it’s identical to the Sahara. I wouldn’t go over the Sahara until you get to the worm drive Shimano reels personally.

7’ 6 to 12 pound test rated rod , med fast to fast , are what I’ve been using for years as go-to. I prefer one piece.
Cant go wrong with the Penn Battle combo from Haddrell’s for $100. The fierce reels are ok but the rods are crap.
My favorites are the St. Croix premier. 7’6" medium light. I think they are $130 or $140 and made in the USA.
