Inshore Tow Service???

I’ve always kept a tow service plan for peace of mind. I believe it’s a good thing to have. I’m starting to add up the years I’ve had it and never needed it and I’m starting to question myself. I never go off shore but there is a lot of water inshore and 1 day I could possibly need a pretty good tow back to the hill. What are your thought on keeping a tow service plan for inshore boating?

Mine comes free with my Geico Boat insurance. You might want to check your insurance company to see if they offer it.

Actually I do have towing with my insurance but I assume it’s probably not that good. Like road side assistance on my auto policy only covers 40 miles. I will look into it.

I only fish inshore and have Towboat US and have used them 3 times in over 10 years. Twice in SC once in the Keys. Silly not to have some tow service.

GOT BOAT US AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO USE THEM ON THE WATER BUT THE ROADSIDE ASSIST IS PRICELESS WHEN SITTING BESIDE A BUSY INTERSTATE WITH THE TOW VEHICLE DISABLED…:dizzy_face::dizzy_face:

Progressive has a program called sign and glide that can be added to your policy for lass than $20 a year. You call them and they call one of the local tow companies. Does everything the tow company does and has road side assistance for the trailer. A lot less than the $192 I was paying per year. I am inshore only also.

I don’t worry about it now that cell phones come out.I would just call one of my boys. You all don’t have any friends.haha

If I had a penny for every time I’ve seen that theory fall through the floor, I’d be a rich man.

Towing and salvage are not cheap. I keep my boat insured through Geico, which includes towing and salvage.

You want free advice from someone who works search and rescue for a living? Don’t leave the dock without insurance!

SOOOOOO MANY THINGS can go wrong. Seersly, get TowBoatUS or SeaTow. You’ll regret EVERY minute you spend trying to get by without them when you need them most.

They offer more than just towing…gas delivery, ungrounding to name a couple. Besides, it’s always better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

Ungrounding alone is worth it. Got ungrounded one night after an evening of shrimping in BB. BoatUS sends you a copy of the bill they pay. Mine would have cost $980.00.

It all depends on how often you plan to break down and how much you think it will cost to get a tow back. Luckily I have a smaller boat that pretty much any boat can tow. I have gotten 2 tows back to the hill in the past 11 years. They cost me a total of $0. How much would 11 years of tow insurance cost?

Well I don’t plan to break down at all but I got towed in Saturday when I busted my prop hub on a tree stump. This was a buddy tow covered by 1 of my friends that was close by. I looked into my insurance policy and I am covered for 1 tow per year not to exceed $3,000. I’m comfortable with that for now. If I have to cash it in then I’ll definitely renew my towboat membership. Hopefully I won’t need either.

seatow,

Best thing in my opinion is a membership through West Marine and TowBoat US. It is well worth the price if needed! Plus the cover you over 50 miles offshore!

I had Boat US that I accidentally let lapse. Launched out of Wappoo running toward Kiawah. My optical sensor failed and I was on the bank directly across from Sol Legare ramp, it was going to be $750 tow back to Wappoo. I had him tow right across the river to Sol Legare for their minimum $150 and had my wife pick me up and drive me back to get the tow vehicle…never let my insurance lapse again…Picked up this years at Costco, they had Sea Tow gold card for $140, it’s $180 on Sea Tow website.

Fortunately I’ve never had to use it, but have Tow US through my insurance which includes towing & salvage - Geico and for my boat that runs me $220 a year. If you have your boat insured, then I’d say you should check your policy and understand your tow coverage. If you don’t have tow or not satisfied with the tow coverage your insurance provides, call around and either get different insurance or pay another $180 for annual tow coverage. Better question is, which tow company is the most responsive for the area you frequent? Since I have no experience in this, perhaps the those that have had to use Sea tow or Tow US in CHS can chime in. Seems that there was a thread on this on CF before.

I’M SURE THEY BOTH PROVIDE A GREAT SERVICE BUT I’VE HAD BOAT US FOR YEARS AND COULDN’T BE MORE SATISFIED…
