Inshore Trolling

I was wondering if anyone ever trolls for schools of blues, Spanish and lady fish. I know in other areas people do and it can be fun on light tackle. I’ve fished a school like this from a dock and it was crazy action but I couldn’t land a fish because of bite offs and jump offs.

don’t you bully my buddy

I was planning to pull some small spoons, x raps, and rattles on 20 to 30lb flouro leaders. If trolling those don’t work I was thinking some mini pin rigs with small finger mullet. Maybe some small dusters or darter jigs or gotchas. I might make something of a cross of a mackerel tree and daisy chain and try that. I don’t think I will pull any planners but maybe a 1 with a 20 to 30ft flouro. As for speeds lures I plan to troll 4 to 10mph and live .5 to 3.5mph.

last year I spoke with some guys who were doing really good catching Spanish & Blues with gold spoons.

Whatever you pull, be sure you have a good swivel somewhere in the setup…I made that mistake when I tried trolling for Spanish for the first time. Turned out not all swivels are made the same. I did catch some Spanish in the harbor pulling small spoons that day though, until my line got twisted all to hell. Haven’t tried in years though, I’d much rather look/cast to schools of them instead.

STRIKE 1

yep. thats 1. lets get him.

BigNic Spanish candy

You could try using Spanish Fly:smiley:

40, I just loaded up on a variety of those clark spoons, ball bearing swivels, birds, a couple diving lures, #1 & #2 planers and flouro leader and was going to troll like a mad man. Hopefully seeing some birds, hooking up on a few, then casting to 'em.

Does that sounds reasonable?

I noticed that most of the videos of trolling for spanish and kings are from Australia, mate, but I’m eager to try it out.

The Spanish in those videos are not the same fish. Regardless look outside the jetties or just inside pending where you see the birds and bait. Early morning and just before sunset they tend be most active on surface.
