Inshore w/o a Boat

Guys,

Pardon my ignorance, but are there areas in the Lowcountry, other than the beach, where reds and trout can be caught from shore? I’m not asking for specific spots, just weighing my options until I get my own boat. Thanks in advance for your ■■■■■■■■.

I’d say, anywhere you can safely or legally park and walk to some water w/o being on someones property. I haven’t done it much, but I’d just keep an eye out for opportunities. I know I’ve seen cars parked off North Bridge before. Near Remley’s I’ve seen people walking the flats. Breach Inlet comes to mind. My neighbor brought a 24" flounder home one day from “beneath 526”. Didn’t ask him how to get there, but that was a beauty and a treat to clean and eat! Had to cut the fillet in quarters to fry it!

May be trial and error, just like WITH a boat!

Just as FYI, you have to have a license to do that now. Used to not be required.

Good luck!

Have you tried that new park at the old Naval base?

Vinman,

I appreciate the advice. I just figured I might have better success if I can find some grass and/or oyster beds to target. Gotcha, haven’t tried the park but definitely will when I get the chance. Thanks to both of you for the ■■■■■■■■.

not as many spots as in years past due to new land owners and urban sprawl, but quit a few left.

Depending on where you want to travel:

Buelow (sp?) landing near red top watched a family catch a couple of trout, one questionable flounder and a couple of whiting. They also had two five gallon buckets almost to the top in crabs.

The Creek before you get onto Kiawa I have seen numerous varieties brough in, sometimes the competition for a place on the bank seems to get a little crowded mostley when the spot bit is on.

Folly Pier.

If your in the Beaufort area under the hwy 21 bridge (whale branch) on the beaufort side, I have watched bank fishermen tear up the trout while I pecked away for a sheephead. Not sure how the parking is now, I think they cracked down on parking on the side of the road?

Hopefully this being a fishing forum some on here won’t be scared to share some areas with you.

Good luck! Just remember if your fishing at a landing boaters do have right-of-way.

You would probably be shocked by the amount some of the non-boat owners bring in as opposed to the wonder breads with the 30k+ flats boats that just love to believe they own a secret spot. If I offened sorry.:imp:

Still remember all the fish dad used to bring in as a kid from the dock because he didn’t feel like putting the boat in.

Bridges, an hour before until an hour after low tide. Then, drive further inland to another bridge, to catch the same tide.

There’s several very good flounder spots along there, caught reds and trout there this year too. Lots of structure=fish.

Also BlackBart, try Pitt Street Bridge in Mt. P.

didn’t think about it but if you decide to fish with a cork, don’t do the freshwater thing and just sling it out there. On a moving tide with a mudminnow or shrimp I like about a 36" leader under the cork and if you’ve seen the area at dead low look for some structure and as tide is rolling let your bait barely “bounce” off the bottom. If your new to an area keep your cork as close to a grass line as you can and look for any eddies or small feeder inlets.

If your into artificials don’t rule out anything. I’ve had my son out fish me using a carolina rig with a pumpkinseed. Have had good results with the gulp sented baits. When your done with a gulp take it off the hook and put it back in the juice pouch or jug for reuse.

Then there is always the tried and true putting your bait on the bottom take a seat and hope a crab doesn’t steal your bait!

Dang,

Y’all’ve done just about everything except reel 'em in and clean 'em for me. Hopefully I’ll be able to reciprocate the knowledge in the future. Thanks again.

You are a lucky man. That is the most ■■■■■■■■ I have seen as far as locations. If you are in west ashley, when it is windy I sometimes fish the point under the cosgrove bridge. You can also walk the grass down the bank and cast artificials. Also caught a sheep off the bridge base once.

if you are on james island you can go down lighthouse point road off ft johnsan rd. and in the back of the neighborhood thier is a grass area in the middle of the road. it you drive past that their is a brick sign entrance to belle terra neighboorhood, drive down that road and look for a lot with a dock on it if your not having sucess off the dock look for different lots with water access. that place has plenty slot bass, trout if you know where to look, and the occasional flounder. good luck.

C’mon shaunj80,

How can you NOT help a guy with a powder-blue tuxedo and a Jheri Curl mullet?..

Is that at the North side where the old Officer’s club/golf course was?

John

I appreciate the info also. I was planning on doing some kayak fishing while visiting this weekend but the wife doesn’t think our son needs to be on the water. Looks like I’ll be hoping for the best from the shore.

friendly reminder that you still need a saltwater fishing license to fish from land now…not nagging, just saying…

The Morris Island Lighthouse www.savethelight.org

They changed that in Florida also. In Florida it’s now required to have a license for shore but it’s free. I don’t see it split out separately so I guess SC requires a regular saltwater license.

yessir, you are correct…

Don’t forget about Breach Inlet. Before we got out boat, we loaded up our wagon every weekend and fished around the rocks. Some days we really tore up the flounder. Fish a few hours before low to a couple of hours after. High tide never worked for us. We also caught some nice trout and reds there too on artificials and live mullet which can be caught right there most of the year at or near low tide. Stay out of the water or you may get a ticket and the drop off and current can be deadly. Work the rocks really well and really close for flounder. Good luck!
