Hey guys,
Really wanting to wade for some reds on the flood tides up in the grass but I have no idea where to go. Any suggestions? Not looking to keep fish or steal someone’s spot just wanting to catch and release some fun nice reds
Drive to flats are usually kept very secret by those that have good ones. This is usually becuase they’ve spent countless hours staring at multiple unproductive flats to find the ones that will hold fish at certain tides. There are plenty around though. I would try starting out on Google Earth and looking for fishy areas there first. In person, you want to find short sparse grass, this is usually hard bottom, much like the same consistancy as walking at the beach. Tall grass tightly packed together is usually very soft pluff.
Always a good idea to take a buddy with you to new flats just in case one of you gets in trouble and sinks up to your thighs…its happened before. And wear closed toed shoes, no flipflops, no barefoot wading.
Go out and try some spots yourself. If you cannot find fish after a few weeks, PM me and I’ll be glad to take you out and show you what to look for.
Good luck.
I have had several of my go to wading spots ruined over the past few years. You got to be careful who you take.
There’s only one spot I fish now that I consider “a sercet” but it won’t last.
I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like in 10 years. Scary…
Nice 1st post LOL

Exactly. Short grass usually means hard bottom. The taller the grass, the softer the bottom. Where the grass is thick and head tall, the mud is usually soft and head deep. This pluff mud can eat you

And this is how flats get ruined.
I take my girl fishing to my wading spot and when we bring home the fish I tell her “if you must say something to your friends about where we were fishing you can tell them we were somewhere around the Cooper River, Wando River, Harbor Area, that’s it. Keep it vague baby”
It’s not that my wading spot is secret, far from it actually. It’s just that almost no one else that I have seen out there knows how to fish it.

truth!
What happened to bonecrushers post? Did the moderator delete it? Seems strange for the moderator to delete fishing info like if they did. However, it seems that one would have to cross private property to get to one of them, so I could see why possibly for that reason.

during low tide, drive around public streets that border the ashley, stono, folly, cooper, or wando rivers and you’re bound to find some nice spots
great advice on wading in the grass. what are you thoughts on mud flats…the kind that are submerged only at high tide and exposed at low tide. if there is no grass growing, is it typically pretty solid?
be careful of the mud you step in, if it looks soupy, you might not get out
Use Google maps and earth, find a river system in the area close to you and look for images walkable from the shore where it appears that the water floods the grass. Then get there at low tide and survey for spots that look more fish able, or productive. If you can find a good marsh close to an area with a lot of oyster mounds good start or try any spot pass Backmens seafood to the solagre boat landingUse a piece of fresh blue crab on circle hook for reds, fiddlers and mussels work well for black drum and sheep head but don’t use circle if your targeting sheep head.

We use circles exclusively for sheeps now. Hook up ratio is about the same as j’s.
