The local kayak community here has two races a year, one in March and one in November. In addition to the races, they have kayak demos and other activities. I approached some of the organizers yesterday with the idea of sponsoring a Kayak/Canoe Fishing Tourney for the November event. (Too late to plan and execute for March, but maybe twice a year option.)
My question, would any of you be willing to travel to Coastal South Carolina the first week of November to enter such a contest?
The concept is to use a similiar one used by Tourney Trout Fishermen, with two kayak teams having a proctor to verify and record the caught fish. (Catch and Release) I am thinking of a $50.00 entrance fee with prizes for 1st through 3rd places in each division (Redfish and Seatrout).
Since the kayak racers are insured as part of the race fee, the sponsors think that getting insurance for fishermen would be accomplished under the same umbrella.
If I get enough interest in the next couple of weeks, I will approch them again with the results, and see if doable.
(BTW: If you answer this poll, please do not answer the same poll if you see it on other forums, as I am trying to spread the message far and wide, and would like to have fairly accurate numbers to move forward with.)
50 dollars is a little pricey for me, sounds like fun though.
what’s up Troy, glad your still with us. How they biting? and how come no reports? I’m catchin a few in the motorboat but not much in yak, waiting on spring… email when ya get a day off to fish.

Hey yak, I posted on another form that you replied to about tournaments in this area. I think we need to keep this form open. What can we do around here to help? Plus are there other forms around here that yakers from our area post on?
we dont necesarily have to go threw all that work we could do a tournament very easily in this area with out having to deal with other groups. but on the other hand if there was one going on i would be interested i do have some experience setting up fishing tournaments and dealing with sponsors so if you have andy questions let me know if i can help i will
congratulations on your big catch Sunday patrick:smiley:. It was nice meeting another yak fishermen . I don’t anything about how tournaments are run. Don’t know how this would apply to us but one e-mail I received read " we are working on it, seems to be a liability issue in SC". Also on another site a replay was “open to anyone willing to sign a waiver and has enough guts” The guts and signing a waiver isn’t a problem. I would just like to understand more about the issues of holding a tournament.
B.A.R.F. you’ve got a growing number of yakers just to the north waiting to get something going. Any kind of help or info would be appreciated.
youd just need to get a group of people together that would be interested in putting it together most local business when aproached properly would be willing to make donations and sponserships to a tournament set a date have a meeting where entry forms will be filled out and go over all rules of tourney set fishing times and a certain time every one has to be at the weight in use the entry fee money as prize money etc…
I’m in too. Also, would be willing to help out. I’ve got more experience with golf tourneys than fishing tourneys, but happy to do what I can. I may be able to influence a few other Yakkers to pick up fishin’ poles and give it a try.

Manolin, I posted about this at another site. You might want to check it out. Was hoping to get someone to run with it, but that didn’t happen. I don’t have any experience with running tournaments so I stopped posting. If theirs anything I can do let me know.
I would love to try again. The Kayak Tourneys I have seen run by Extreme Edge Fishing, have a radius of up to 50 miles! That would encompass from south of Savannah to north of Charleston if centered on Beaufort. Pretty big area.
I know of one person locally trying to have a Cobia and Shark tourney in late april early may. Since the Cobia and sharks are heavy in these waters during that time period, the fishing should be AWESOME.
I think the best thing to do is along the lines of the B.A.R.F. get together, we had at the Hunting Island Lagoon in November. Only 6 Yakkers showed up, but the fishing was great, and contacts were made.
I would be willing to try another get together again this spring, but not sure a tourney is doable here yet.
