what is a good kayak to get in the
$300-$400 price range?
For that price you can find a good Wilderness systems Tarpon if you’re lucky… I got a Pelican castaway 116 for $400 when I first started… not a very fast boat but it is stable and very fishable… I paddled it in some awesome places and caugth a lot of fish with it… I stoppped in to sports authority the other day and they are running $499 new… check craigslist, your local paper, or e-bay for used ones but if you really want a fishing machine… save up some more ducks and go see Dolphin Dave at Time out for a Ride 135…

Dolphin D at Time Out Sports will fix you up.
You will need a little deeper pockets though.
What I have learned, Sportsman Warehouse has Scotty Rod Holders for $14, Doplhin D charges ~$25. I have 4 per boat, so that adds up. Capt Dicks Anchor trolley is ~50 for a dual side anchor trolley. I believe that you can rig your own for $10 bucks that works, but Capt Dicks is a true trolley system. Milk Crate is cheap/ free.
If you select a Ride 135 or Tarpon, you are looking at ~$1,000 - $1,200 dressed out.
Ebay or Craigs list can shave $$$$ off the figure.

I good basic yak will run you about $800 but depending on how you want to trick it out will cost you the extra dollars… My pelican had two “built in” rod holders that sucked… I addes some PVC tubes to a milk crate for rod holders and it cost me like $10 total… If you want Scotty rod holders and fish finders and anchor trolleys you can spend as much, or as little , as you want… My first anchor trolley was made out of 550cord (parachute cord), a couple of carabiners I had laying around and a steel ring from harbor freight… total cost $.79 for the ring… Don’t let the extras price scare ya off… spend the bucks and get yourself a good platform to fish from and take your time rigging it up… I am tellin ya a milk crate and some PVC and you’ll be set up…

Give me a call. I’ve got an awesome sit in that I’d sell for $450.
it has dry storage, deck rigging, and a comfortable seat. (Something these guys will tell you is really important for a full day fishing)
It’s fast, stable and roomy. Adjustable foot braces, dry storage compartment, anchor trolley, yada, yada, yada.

So much water, So little time
im 16, mainly just looking for a way to fish without using my boat this summer
i have a job just not gonna be easy to get more money quickly
get a cheap sit in and bungee cord a milk crate to the rear deck. check craigslist and the local pawn shops on a regular basis.
Besides, if you’re 16 and have a boat just suck it up and buy gas.
you’re living at home so there’s no rent, groceries, utilities, …
So much water, So little time
i dont have a problem with the gas
my mom is just *****y about me taking it out
by myself:angry:
all good points
however,
go to west marine, get the “kingfisher” it is usually $450 but they always have it on sale for $350
it is my vessel to go fishing - stable as can be - still do the milk crate thing for storage
i have been using it heavy for six months - my next yak will be a boat - because the kingfisher is all the yak i need to go fishing
GOOD LUCK!!! Spurrier Sucks.[:0]

Between CF.com and sckayakfishing.com you can pretty much always find someone to kayak with.
nikonj - just checked out the kayak website - Awesome!! Didn’t know there was one. I don’t have a fishing kayak but have a 17’ Perception eclipse. I’ve fished from it but the cockpit if very tight and I have not rigged a way for a rod holder. Pretty tough. May have to look at one like you guys have. Thanks for the post with the link to the kayak website!

quote:Give me a shout sometime. I've fished about of about a dozen different yaks in the last 2 months, so I've worked on a couple of "universal" rigging set ups. We can get you rigged easily enough or I can trade with you from one in my stable. There's 4 yaks in the garage right now.
