IOP 1/6/15

Went behind IOP today. Launched at Breach Inlet, which I wouldn’t do unless it was as calm as it was today. However as soon as I hit Hamlin Creek the wind was ripping. I felt like a sail. Made my way to some creeks on the other side of the ICW and was looking for reds in small creeks. I found them in the only two creeks I checked. One school had about 20, the other about 10 or so. Creek got so shallow at dead low that I had to walk the kayak over a few spots. With the wind whipping up the water and the sun getting low, visibility was really bad today. I spooked both schools just by not seeing them until the last minute and this was while I was standing up. Unfortunately, no hook ups. First time I went, I didn’t see a thing (last Friday), Second time I saw them (today), here’s hoping I catch one on the Third trip.

Side note, it is never a good idea to fall out of your kayak. landed on my feet in waist deep water. Good thing it was as warm as it was today.

I can deal with most conditions in the kayak, but that wind is brutal.

A good rule of thumb to follow is the ?120? rule.? This means you should wear a wetsuit or dry suit whenever the sum of the air temperature and water temperature is equal to or less than 120?F.

Thanks DF. I had some extra clothes that i quickly changed into. I will keep that rule in mind.

I launch from Breach Inlet as well. Thanks for report!
