IOP advice

Hello All,

I used to freshwater fish a LOT, but have only saltwater fished a little back when I was younger. Mostly it was from the pier at Boy Scout Camp at Wadmalaw. My wife wants to go fishing (which makes me excited) but our only day is tomorrow and we will be out at Wild Dunes. I figured we would do some bank fishing because I haven’t gotten the boat back up and running yet. Any help is most appreciated. We will just be catching and releasing for fun and I am looking for any help you can give on a spot and/or techniques. Thanks ladies and gents!

Hey bud. Welcome to CF.com. Before you get blasted for putting this in the Inshore Reports area… You might want to post this up in the Pier/Surf Fishing area. Or, use the search button up top under Services. Plenty of info on bank fishing IOP to be found. Rookie mistake, no harm!

Good luck to ya!

Thanks NorthChuckTiger! I actually just realized I put it under the reports area. My apologies but thanks for not hazing me too bad!

For surf fishing fun, take either/both raw shrimp and squid. Cut them into 1/2" size pieces (about the size of a large wad of chewing gum) and use a #4 or #6 (ie, small) hook.

Any bottom rig can work. Carolina rigs are common, but I prefer to just make a drop-shot rig.

Cast just behind the breakers. You don’t have to cast it all the way to England to find fish.

Lots of whiting, spots, croakers can be found in the IOP surf. If you have larger tackle, you can put one of the cut whiting on a larger hook (4/0 or bigger) and you can fish for smaller sharpnose and bonnethead sharks, or bull redfish.

You can increase the chances of a redfish or sea trout by using live mud minnows or cut mullet strips.
