We will be coming down for our yearly family vacation on Friday and will be staying for a week. Me and my dad will be bringing a boat to do some fishing (looking like the 14ft skiff as the bay boat may not be ready), and we were just looking for general tips as to what to look for in an area and also what bait to use. Thanks in advance!
As an Upstate man myself with an inshore addiction best of luck to you and your dad. Certainly, looking at this website’s history will be invaluable. As far as bait, live bait, imo, will be the best for y’all. Live shrimp is my go to and can be purchased at Haddrell’s tackle shop near Shem Creek -buy them the morning of your fishing trip. If they are out then I would normally go look for baitfish and throw a net. Third choice, but an effective one, would be to get mud minnows at any of the fuel docks, IOP marina will have them early morning but run out after 10 o’clock or so. If you have braided line great, if not and it is just the week then your fluro/mono will be fine, just expect oysters to cut your line and be ready to tie. 20 pound test will be perfect. Use a 1/0 or 2/0 circle hook. In a boat that size, you should be able to draft into the flats, look at Gray’s Bay, Bullyard, behind Toler’s Cove and Hamlin Sound. (you’ll find a chart through Google to locate those). Don’t even think about the harbor. Fish creek mouths, points, under docks and oyster beds. Probably the biggest difference to remember from our bass fishing in our Upstate lakes is be quiet. No music, no slamming lids, cut motor early and drift to where you want to be. Hope this helps you and your dad.
Cracker I think that upstate man has been down there a few times , not like this upstate man . I better buddy up to BALLen so my trips will be more productive .
