I want to hook up a charger in my boat; something small and out of the way. The only two options I have come up with are the USB port and the 12v accessory plug (cigarette lighter type) chargers. At some point I will also get a handheld VHF and a GPS-Fishfinder combo, but I don’t know how this affects my decision. I am guessing that the GPS-FF will be hooked up to the switch panel so no need for a charger there. I don’t know if I would need to charge a handheld VHF for a one-day fishing trip if I start with a full charge.
Are there options besides the two I mentioned (USB and accessory plug) that I should consider? Would like to hear how some of you charge your phone in the boat. Thanks.

I don’t stay out long enough to need to charge my phone, but I do have a cigarette lighter style plug and a charger that I take with me just in case.
My GPS/FF goes straight to the battery terminals.
Your handheld radio should be good for a few days on a full charge.
Don’t forget to put fuses on this stuff when installing it.

I have a waterproof “cigarette lighter” plug. Use it for a pole light or handheld spot. Never used it for phone charging but that would probably be the best way to go. I believe the plug is a Marinco.

I think I found my solution - the MinnKota Trolling Motor Power Center. I plan to get a small trolling motor in the future and this will be useful for that as well. Plus, I needed a battery box. Can get it delivered for just over $60 from Amazon.
For small boat, transom applications (boats that do not have battery compartments), these easy access external battery terminals allow trolling motor leads and charger leads to be connected without opening the box. Built-in battery meter includes two 12-volt accessory plugs, and 2 manual reset circuit breakers (10 amp for accessory plugs and 60 amp for trolling motor). Displays current “state of charge”. Fits group 24- and 27-size batteries.

Surf I have that exact box for my whaler. The problem is it’s not designed for saltwater. It works great for a while then it rusts out. I still have it but have to take the lid off and connect my TM directly to the terminals

Get a Snow Lizard Case. A little pricey but a very nice, waterproof case Kinda like the life proof case but the back has a solar panel to charge and also a built in battery pack.

Small inverters are cheap. You can stow it when you don’t need it and most have USB outlets now.
I’ve got one on my boat for the same reason. Mostly stays in the dry box. But it will also let you plug in other things… Lights, etc if needed. $30. Would also recharge a VHF when needed.

CIG plug style is the best way to go. You will end up using it for spot lights and stuff anyway. Buy another phone charger to leave in your boat and you won’t have to remember to bring it.
Another option is an emergency charger. I bought one off of flea bay for about $5 and it takes 2 AA batteries and will charge your phone. Comes in handy all the time.

Dave, I wonder if I could use some type of anti-corrosion spray that would extend the life of the connections. I already ordered it so I’ll use it until it craps out on me.
