Is Capers Inlet navigable to the ocean?

I’m going camping on Capers Island this weekend and was wondering if I can get into the ocean through Capers Inlet (I’m thinking of heading out to Capers Reef on saturday). My boat drafts about 2 feet, my Navionics chart says it is 2 feet deep once you get out of the inlet (in the breakers), is it correct? Has anyone done this before? Or do you know if it’s possible? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. The last thing I want to do is turn a fun camping trip into a boating fiasco. - Rick

Yes you can get into the ocean. What end of Capers are you camping on? The bars out front constantly change though. The last few times I have gone into the ocean thru either inlet, you had to run south down the beach a little bit and then work your way out thru the breakers. If it looks shallow it probably is. Running out of Dewees inlet is much easier and it wouldn’t take you much time to run south in the ICW to get there. good luck and give us a report back

Thanks for the advice. We’re camping on the south end of the island so i was going to try to get out between Dewees and Capers but I like your advice about going out Dewees Inlet, I think I’ll do that since you say it is easier to get out thru there, better safe than sorry. If I do decide to go I will definitely post a report, I’m curious if the sheepshead are out there yet, i’m gonna take some fiddlers with me. It was about this time last year that I went out to the Chas Nearshore reef and had a blast catching sheeps, black drum and weakfish. They were out there in full force.

Well, thanks for the advice guys but I never made it out there, it was a little too rough.
