Wanting to give Murray a try Sunday. Can fish still be had on planers or should I be prepared for down rods? Any depth to start looking?
Both boards and downrods are producing fish. Earlier in the week both were catching keepers. Then water got a little cooler and it seems more keepers are back on boards…
Hearing some people are already in 70-80’ of water chumming and drumming…I havent got any to eat a spoon yet so I am staying with boards till they eat a spoon.
Pulling boards on the edge of the grass. 15-40’ of water…
Downrods in 40-80’ of water normal drum and chum. Dont waste your time on the humps. They are elsewhere…the fish did this same pattern about 2 years ago if you keep a log… (one day I might decide to write something down…lol…)

I was wondering the same thing about downrods. I don’t fish on Memorial Day weekend anymore; so I haven’t been out for the last couple weeks. Last time out, we caught 20+ keepers pulling in 15-40 like Chip mentioned. Was considering going to the Hill Saturday, but the rain upcountry could have things messy upriver. Therefore, I’ll hit Murray and choose carefully what I drop on with 5 & done. Downrods have been hit and miss for me so far.

Thanks for the good info once again. I’ll bring my last few gizzards for the planers and buy some herring for downrods after the sun gets up good.

The last time I was out, nearly every striper we caught coughed up 8"-9" herring at the boat. Some of the biggest herring I’ve ever seen on Murray.

Fog, I just saw this thread and didn’t want to text you this late. If you do go to the Hill, the fish are on downrods there. But they are still very shallow, but eating downrods. Feel free to text me if you want some more details. Chip
I’ll get with you soon on that Tiger. I’m committed to Murray in the morn. We have 2 work days this week coming up. Wednesday, we’re off for the summer. On Thursday, I’m heading to Charleston for my Coast Guard physical and drug screen and to deliver my final paperwork to Sea School; so it’ll be next Saturday at the earliest that I’ll hit Hill.

Keep an eye out for the drug test results. If you are taking the test at seaschool they have to send the test off to Colorado (of all places) then the drug test company is supposed to email you the results, which then you have to forward to seaschool… that is If seaschool is the one sending in your application. If you are doing it yourself once you have the results then just send the packet in.
I waited 2 weeks and 3 days (they said i should have results back in less than 2 weeks) heard nothing so I had to track down my results…I have never jumped through so many hoops in my life for a piece of paper, nor been 100$ billed to death…seems everytime you turned around someone wanted another 100$…lol…

It is somewhat of a hassle, but I’m going to Coastal Occupational Medicine in Charleston. They work directly with Sea School. When I get my physical and drug screen done Thursday, I’m hand delivering the rest of the paperwork to them for review. When they get the results from the tests, they said they’d mainline everything to the Coasties in Charleston. I already have my TWIC card and everything else done; so hopefully I’ll be officially Captain Fog by the end of the month.

Fogman, if you use a nasal inhaler (Vicks) because of the pollen or a cold, stop using it for awhile. Routine drug screening at my pain doctor came back positive for meth, the ONLY explanation they could give me was either I was using meth (NOT) or I was using a nasal inhaler (I was)
10-4. I haven’t had need of that stuff since my sinus surgery 4 years ago. However, that’s good info.

To get back to the point of the thread, yes. It is time for down rods. Caught my 5 in 20 minutes in 52 feet, a couple cranks off.

Planers are still working very well in the mornings.

Certainly. It’s just more practical for me to put out a downrod or 2 when fishing solo during 5&done. If I had another person or 2 onboard, I would have done a pull.

I have switched to down rods on the hill with good results in the past week or so. A few fish 20 plus. I don’t know about Murray, I haven’t made a trip up there lately.
we have been hitting our 3 to 4 person limit with down rods 60-80 ft at night. with bigger fish coming in after dark …mid lake

With water temps pushing north of the 80 degrees, down rod fishing is in full swing.
I haven’t been out in close to 2 years, but will start back night fishing next week with the kids. My usual humps should produce some fun evenings for the kids. Fish tacos are calling me.
