I replaced a dead alternator today on my wife’s 2005 Camry,4 cyl, VVTi engine. It was one SOB and I shed a lot of blood, but finally got her done. I ain’t a car mechanic. All is charging well again, but the car now idles too low, to the point of cutting off. Didn’t have any idling issues before I changed the alternator. The battery has been disconnected for 2 days. Did I do something to the computer brains to cause the idle problem? Anybody got any ideas? I know a lot more about boats than I do cars.

that’s what Donnie was going to tell you…the computer "relearns/restores " the settings sometimes by doing this if the battery has been disconcted and reconnected
Thanks Penny Dori told me that she got your VM message after a long day, but we had it figured out by then. Wasn’t sure if that computer might reset itself or it needed a reset procedure, but it did it by itself

Pft. Toyota. Great cars, but nowhere near the lovely challenge that my 03 Deville is. I just swapped the alternator on it. Had to remove the breather box for the intake, the PCM module had to be set aside, and the radiator had to come out.
All that, and installing the alternator was far easier than putting the new drive/serpentine belt on. Even with the tensioner loosed as much as possible, only skinned knuckles (or, tricks I do not know) will get it on there.
The nice thing about a Northstar is, if you ever get lost, it leaves a very conspicuous trail of oil on the road that you can conveniently follow home.

Amen! The hardest part of the entire job was putting that @#$^*%$# serpentine belt back on. It was a @#$%& to get it off, but getting it back on took a lot of words that I can’t type here [:0]
