Is this a Ladyfish?

Caught this flippin’, floppin’, flyin’ fellow in the creek today, and have never seen one of its kind before.

My amateur detective work sez ladyfish.

Any takers?

Thanks

Correct

thanks for the confirmation.

And Im hearing they are really not edible (too many bones, mushy) except in a pinch, as fish patties.

Anyone have a ladyfish recipe that doesnt involve a carolina rig?

They make great bait

x2 on bait - use them to catch something tastier!

careful about bringing them in the boat. The have a tendency to want to let the crap fly when they start flipping and flopping everywhere.

And they seem to be super slimey.

About a zillion years ago, my brother and I were just kids fishing from a wooden boat in Tampa bay. We caught a tub full of those things and hauled them home thinking they were “king fish”. Our mother made us bury them in the garden.

There’s a Kodachrome slide of me at age 12 proudly holding up a ladyfish which is taking a squirt in my lap.

For the size, nothing is more fun to catch on light tackle. Just don’t bring them in the boat.

If you just let them flop around a while at the side of the boat lots of time you can do what i call a “Carolina quick release” which is basically them flopping off. A.K.A.“poor mans tarpon”.

caught about like 500000000000000 of those in the glades earlier this year

x2 about what jimmy said, just hold em by the boat and watch them release themselves!

And whatever you do with them, never ever stick your fingers in the gills like you would some fish to hold them up. If you’re lucky you’ll only need stitches… The gill plates are like razor blades.

Just curious, why did you keep it if you didn’t know what it was?

Hooked a 18-20incher one of these today on a MM off the bottom, was in 6 feet of water past the harbor but before open water. I’m still struggling mightily to figure out where to find redfish. The ladyfish was a really fun fight on my little spinning gear, only running about 10lb test. Took a huge first run about 100 yards and was leaping like crazy, great fun.

How would you guys use this for bait? Strip him up in little filets or chunks? What can you typically catch using these as bait?
