When talking to locals/fisherpersons it’s dolphin. When im gifting a few filets to my Yankee neighbors, or splaining things to peeps not in the know, its Mahi. Sorry if it pisses you off but it cuts down on the small talk. Kinda like texting.
I’m still not sure what using the term “mahi” when conversing with your yankee neighbors has to do with all the folks using that term on this website. Seems like “dolphin” would work just fine on here.
quote:Honest question: where are you fellas who call dolphin "mahi" from? And don't reply with the typical transplanted Charleston Yankee phrase "I've lived here for ___years." The question is where were you born.
Born and raised right here in South Carolina. 52 years at darn near the same address. Moved only once and then it was only 200 yards down the road. But I really don’t see your point with the question.
I’m like a lot of other folks, when talking to non-fisher people it will continue to be Mahi. Just like wasting my time explaining the diffrence to them, I have wasted my time with this thread.

The "Penn"sion Plan
I see the point in saying mahi to avoid unneeded explanations to the general public, but still think it’s strange to call dolphin “mahi” on a SC fishing forum.
I have commissioned a focus group to further delve into the explosive “is it a mahi or dolphin” debate! We must get this resolved so the world does not fall off it’s axis!!!
What Larry said and yes Red fish were called channel bass or just bass back in the day
Local Boy, Just having fun.
Are you talking about "spot tails"? Also, "red drum" said very quickly is phonetically similar to "red rum" which spelled backwards is the word "murder"...

Stephen King is bad for the mind!
When I was a kid the little ones were called puppy drum, the mid sized fish spot tails and the big ones stag bass. Nobody knew what a redfish was. Or a mahi

I chuckle to myself whenever I hear soemone refer to a “saltwater catfish”. Back on the TX Gulf Coast, we called them T.R.s (Turd Russlers). I am sure that saltwater catfish is more correct, but TR is more fun to say.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
You are all very fortunate to be able to go offshore and then complain/discuss the name of the gamefish you catch. I wish I could get out there on my 17 ft CC to catch dolphin, mahi, mahi-mahi, dolphin fish our whatever you want to call it.
In New Bern, NC by Morehead City it was always Dolphin
