That the term “mahi” gets eliminated from our vocabulary? They’re dolphin—“mahi” is like nails on a chalkboard.
Probly not. Mahi sounds exotic and expensive. Dolphin brings up thoughts of Flipper tailwalking…
Mahi is yankee-speak. It sounds stupid, but it definitely tells you right away who the johnny come latelys are.
The belief that mahi-mahi fish are actually dolphins has become extremely widespread, and many well-meaning acitivists have urged cooks and fellow activists to organize a global rejection of the meat. Because of the common perception that actual dolphins are cuter or more intelligent than fish species, many seafood-lovers have been horrified by a false realization that the fish they are consuming is a cetacean. The above is why I refer to them as Mahi. I got tired of the 10 minutes I would spend trying to explain that we are not catching and eating “Flipper”.
Everyone has ordered Mahi-Mahi at Outback before. The same people wouldn’t know what Cory or Dorado was either.
As for “Yankee Speak”, Mahi-Mahi is a term originated in Hawaii in the 1940s…I know a few folks from Hawaii and wouldn’t dare call them Yankees. I guess I’ll be your nail from here on.

By the same token, when I was a boy, “redfish” were spottail bass or channel bass. Who changed the name and why. They are really more bronze or sometimes whitish silver than red.

How many people who grew up in SC use the term “mahi”?
Probably most of the people that don’t fish for them and don’t live on the coast! Which, would be a bunch. You go to the Up State and walk into a restaurant and 9 times out of 10, if it is on the menu, it will be Mahi Mahi!
I blame “mahi” for the dissapearance of the yellowfin tuna.
Need to get Done Hammond to check the dolphin catches in the late 80s early 90s. Certaintly not nearly as prolific as they are today.
Call me a fish snob if you like, mahi is average table fare at best, poor fighters and can be a downright nuisance.
Give me one yellowfin tuna for every 100 “mahi”.

Honest question: where are you fellas who call dolphin “mahi” from? And don’t reply with the typical transplanted Charleston Yankee phrase “I’ve lived here for ___years.” The question is where were you born.

I call them dolphin, but have to label it “Mahi” on the counter because of all the locals thinking it is flipper. Much easier that way then trying to explain about the Marine mammal protection act of 1974…

I actually use the term “mahi mahi” when talking to non-fishers. It avoids me going into a 10 minute explanation of how the fish is not related to the mammal and just happens to have the same name. I don’t have time to tell this story. My time is more valuable than that, so I just take the easy way out and dumb it down for the audience…
go on the offshore report forum and see hom many actual “fishman” call them mahi, not dolphin. Its about 9 out of 10. You must be that other 1.

Same here…
When talking to locals/fisherpersons it’s dolphin. When im gifting a few filets to my Yankee neighbors, or splaining things to peeps not in the know, its Mahi. Sorry if it pisses you off but it cuts down on the small talk. Kinda like texting.
Screw it let’s just call them supper.
