Isle of Palms August 12-19th

1st post here so be gentle. I’m planning on a week long vacation to IOP with a 13 year old daughter who loves to fish. I have a charter scheduled to catch reds at the jetties for Tues but was hoping to surf fish or fish Breach Inlet. Is anyone willing to offer advice for a hot spot and technique to entertain a 13 yo?

If you want to surf fish just go get a couple double-bottom surf rigs, either 2 or 3 oz pyramid weights, and use squid for bait. You can pretty much throw that out anywhere off the beach on IOP…look at low tide for any big troughs/cuts and fish around those. You should catch all the small sharks, whitings, and rays you want…you should also catch a couple reds, black drum and trout mixed in (especially if you fish those troughs). I usually just use smaller size circle hooks.

Although it has been almost a decade since I tried…I never really had much success around Breach inlet. Always did much better off the beach. Good luck

Sullivan’s side of breach inlet pack light and work all the rocks from by the bridge all the way around to 30 block. They hold lots of game fish and other small fish. Carolina rig with fresh or live bait down current close to the rocks is a winning combo. A sabiki rig and a 1 oz weight with tiny pieces of fresh shrimp will have her entertained.

Also I like when the tide is moving and on the lower stages of the tide.

Thanks. That is what we have done in the past with fair results. She has caught a few nice reds, trout and an excessive number of junk fish. We use cut mullet, mud minnows and shrimp. I never had much luck at Breach Inlet and wonder if it is even worth the drive. I was going to try fish finder rigs this year instead of the double bottom but may try one of each. Thanks for the input.

This sounds like what I want to do. Any idea of what we will catch this time of year? Is a 20lb leader with light line ok?

With all the mud minnows you might get a flounder. We have caught plenty down from fort moultrie . 20 lb test should be fine, and get out real early.
