It sucks but it's necessary

This pretty much eliminates Striper fishing the Saluda. The last few years there have been zero big fish in the river until late June or Early July. They have all been gone by the beginning of October.

Maybe after a few years of this the population will rebound ala the Redfish.

Of course, this is all assuming they actually enforce the law and keep the rednecks from keeping illegal catches. Limits are meaningless on that river right now.

it needs to be done on murray to.3 fish 26inch.alot of the guides will now target murray.this would increase the stress on the population.i have nothing against guides before this thing gets out of hand.i fish for stripers average 3 days a week but the size has decreased over the last couple of years.

Lots of 18" to 20" fish on murray. But murray has no natural reproduction anyway. It is pretty much a put and take system. I would like to see a 26" limit. Then we would all be catching 25" fish. Since I only keep about four fish a year that is fine by me. Bad thing about murray is the fish are so easy to catch in the summer and you can’t release the ones caught deep or they die. Plus there are too many fish kills. I would rather let people eat them than watch them pile up dead at the dam.

i can go along with the 26" or maybe 25". a 26er is a large fish. i also can go along with a three fish limit. what i would like to see though is being able to keep at least one small fish that is going to die anyway when you bring him up from the deep. if we need to let that fish count toward the three limit then so be it. it is going to be interesting to see who really gets behind this and hopefully we have knowledgeable fishermen and not frigging politicians that have no clue except what some lobbyist or tree hugger tells them.

Coolbreeze,
This proposal from the dam at lake murray down. It does not cover Lake Murray itself. It should pass, it seems like everyone is aware that there is a major problem. I think they would need to do something about the fish kills on murray before they impose anything like this on the lake.

tom that was me starting that.it was just a theory.i for one would like to see that.i think msc has something in the works about oxygen pumps at the dam from what i heard it is a while down the road.don’t hold me to this.maybe one of the msc guys can share a little info on it.

Like the article said, Santee cooper was at one time a WORLD CLASS
fishey. WORLD CLASS. Murray could easily become that type of fishery with some half way decent management. We need a more aggressive size limit or maybe a slot limit, and Who the heck needs to keep 5 fish every time they go out??

Who needs to keep 5 stripers every trip? Why every white trash loser from Cayce who can afford a 14 foot surf rod and 50 pound test that’s who.

Hey, i am a white trash loser from Cayce. But I only use a 12’ surf rod with 50#. So maybe you were not talking about me.

OK, First of all, the article in The State paper stated that the Santee fishery would be closed and I may have worded it that way, also. That’s not totally accurate. The posession of striped bass is prohibited June through September. Catch and release is allowed, but discouraged. Catch and release in the lower Saluda will have a higher success rate due to cooler water temperature. There were many factors that made Santee a world class fishery in the past that simply no longer exist and can’t be resurrected easily. The rediversion canal disrupted the influx of bait and brood stripers to the system, the introduction of blue cats stress the declining prey base and the proliferation of the white perch decimates the eggs and fry of the stripers and white bass. As you can see, there is no silver bullet to restore what once was. Secondly, this plan is not a conspiracy cooked-up in a back room of the state house. Actually, this was a refreshing approach where the agriculture commitee brought together effected user groups through a shareholder’s commitee to study the issue and make recommendations that would fairly address the concerns of everyone and also recover the fishery. Guides, fishing clubs, legislators, DNR, and tourism officials spent much time drafting the plan presented to the house. The house accepted the plan and introduded it as bill H. 4548. Please, support it.
As for Lake Murray, the main culprit leading to summer fish kills is efluent discharge by sewage treatment plants in tributaries of the Little Saluda and Bush rivers, which raise the nitrogen and phospherous level downstream, resulting in poor water quality. Also, the operation pattern of the turbines at SCE&G’s Saluda Shoals Station is a contributig factor in the temperature / oxygen equation in summer months. User groups of Lake Murray are requesting that DHEC take a closer look at waste water plants upstream and hopefully that problem source can be resolved.
I’ve typed enough for now. I’ll share my take on limits tomorrow.

White trash is more of a state of mind tom. You’re too classy to fit that description.

I hope you’re right flatlander. I am strictly a catch and release fisherman down there anyway and I only fish in the Lower Saluda above the junction. So my releases have a very high survival rate in the cold water. But if the law says no catch and release I will abide.

I am a catch and releas guy for the most part. 100% on the Saluda once I knew the issues. Every fish I have ever released on the saluda seemed to swim away strongly. I have also never seen any dead fish except the ones that were already cleaned at the ramp. I kept a 44" fish my first trip to the river when i moved here. if I knew then what I knew now, I would have let it go. i also keep my summer catches when the fish move deep and the surface is too warm. No use letting fish go to die. I usually keep one and give the rest to the person who looks like they need it the most at the fishing dock. I don’t think that is legal, but I don’t like frozen striper and I don’t want to waste it.

All i can say is C.P.R. (catch photo release)its hard halling fish in a kayak anyway

as far as the Saluda, I agree. I would actually like to see it become catch and release, period. That would eliminate (or make it easier to catch) the meat fisherman. The second issue would be to ensure more regular, consistent flow of water. I believe this concept has been forwarded also by trout unlimited and other groups.

JOE

sharky; you actually called tom a classy guy. next thing you know you will be calling dano’s a 4 star resturant. (actually; dano’s does have pretty good food.) just raggin on you tom. how about give me a call. i need to find someone to fish with sat morning. my son has a dentist appt and cannot make the launching.

Wait so there is no fishing in the Saluda from June 1 to Sept. 30 or is it just catch and release?

But I got to stop wishin, got to go fishin

I would imagine you are not allowed to keep stripers then. They cant shut down the entire system like that. All the catfish guides would be out of business. Plus all the money that is made on people coming in to fish.
