I, like DFreedom, am a LEO and a lifelong hunter, sport shooter and trainer. In fact I teach firearms. The old saying “don’t pulli it/point it unless you intend to use is” still rings true. What that phrase is talking about, I think, is the needless brandishing of a firearm. In this instance a threat was presented. The OP recovered his weapon from a glove box, mine would have been much closer, and he waited to see if the threat of force was sufficient to diminish the trheat posed by the other motorist. The threat or promise of force was sufficient to diffuse the situation. Nobody got hurt and the aggressor learned a lesson. Well, I hope he did, anyway. Will he recall this incident the next time someone does something that he takes offense to? Who knows. Sounds like you made a good call.

Ernest Hemingway
Wow bolbie must live in constant fear of retaliation. Best stay indoor and huddle in the corner and wait for some one to find you. Who knows the potential perp may have a gang all armed and will burn you out. Living like a coward sounds like his way of life.

sitting in the car and thinking about the possibility that he might get hit with a few magnum revolver hollow points. Basically, act like a normal human being and just wait one min. Chas has bad traffic sometimes, and get over it. And now we start the what if game. What if a frog had wings?
I’d rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave.
Also, i cant and would not have been able to give a description other than car color and race. it was a 70’s car and i have no idea what kind, make or anything b/c that was just before my time. I was focused only on my revolver, his weapon, his movements, speed in my direction, his words and/or intent. We he saw that gun he was out of there so fast. i took a deep breath, heard him peel out and looked up he was long gone.

If the study was based on those who lawfully carry in the US it would have been interesting. It would have shown a lower rate of arrest and violent crime than the US population as a whole. Unfortunately, that’s not what this study was so therefore its relevance to law-abiding people like us is nil.

A study by the University of Pennsylvania looked at 700 shootings. The results were quite surprising. According to the peer reviewed study in the American Journal of Public Health if you carry a firearm you are 5 times more likely to get shot and 4 times more likely to get killed.
When I went through CWP training, the instructor told us if this type of situation happens where you “pull” a gun to defend yourself (only done when you are ready to kill to save your life) and the other guy fortunately has a sudden change of heart and turns around and leaves…make sure you go directly to the police station and file a report before the other guy does. Give them a description of the guy and your version of the story. Otherwise, he could get there first and make a report against you (for brandishing). That would be my only advice…I have several family members in law enforcement and they say this is a very good idea. I had a similar situation years ago where two guys were hell bent on stealing my car and tried to box me in by standing in front of my car (a Corvette)…I hit the gas - they jumped out of the way. I filed a report and the cop said thanks for the info and that I’m well within my rights to run them over in that situation. One of them had a gun, by the way.
None of us want to be put in these situations. I had about 3 seconds to make that decision.
Sounds like you did the right thing in the very little time you had…all the “what ifs” are a waste of time when you are threatened. Survival is all that matters and you can only go with “what is” or the current situation.
People act like you have all sorts of time to weight the pros/cons, make phone calls, etc. It usually doesn’t work like that. In general, a call to 911 is just to cover your ass anyway to show that you made an attempt to get the police to resolve it. They will not get there in time. Confrontations like this happen in seconds.
The bottom line lesson here: road rage and going up to someone’s window with a weapon of any sort can get you killed! The other guy got that message and made the right decision to do an about face.
