Noticed I am not getting fired up like I used to for a fishing trip.May be the heat or that I am just getting old.All the hoopla is getting old.I have to load up bait, gas up,make sure the boat is clean and ready to go.When I return clean everything up and go sit down for a break.Any of you guys getting like that.Maybe it’s because i am retired and can do what i like. When I worked all I thought about was a day off and hitting the river.I know I will invite a hot bikini babe out next trip and see if that perks me up.Any advice???![]()

I can relate to that.I think its a little burn-out.When you don’t have to go to survive, some take a different approach.
Yes, it takes me much longer to get fired up for an off-shore trip than it used to.
I’m retired too and can write my own ticket; but nowadays it takes me a day or two to recover from a day at sea-especially if it was rough.
Also, I like a couple of strong crew on board to pull anchors etc. They sure are quicker than I am these days. One of them grabbed my hand just in time to keep me from going OB on my last trip!
Their schedules are pretty full with work etc., but once in a while they are free; and we go.
Still enjoy the game though-no plans to quit!
Sorry, stono, you asked for advice.
Well, how about a CREW of lovely young ladies for you knowing in the ways of the water; and, at our age CPR and defib:wink:

I think owing a boat and fishing is kind of a “labor of love” and sometimes it feels like more work than fun, having a good helping crew makes it a lot better.
If you have a young kid or teenager that lives around you, see if they would like to make a few bucks cleaning your boat when you get back. If you get the right person and they do a good job then you will be set and its nice to be able to just unhook the boat be done with it.
good luck!
At 61 I too know what it feels like to “loose a step” as Deon Sanders said. The young people I taught to hunt and fish 15 years ago prefer the company those their own age. My wife is an enthusiastic fisher woman and encourager so she helps me get the lead out,but she doesn’t have the “time on the water” I have. When I got a used flats boat the young man next door was so excited it made me want to go too. A younger or less experienced person adds the excitement and incentive that gets the juices flowing again especially if they like the work.

I can’t relate to the retired part but I can see where the enthusiasm might not be there all the time…especially if you live on the coast and it is easier to get out. Yes the before and after prep and cleaning is no fun but I just accept it as part of the deal. I live in Columbia so most of my boating is done on fresh water (just not the same). I brought my wife and 2 boys down yesterday and spent the entire day in and around the harbor. I feel refreshed and recharged today even though it is Monday and I am back at work. I spent every Summer of my childhood in Beaufort, on the water and I am reminded every time I get to the coast, how much those memories mean to me and how much I miss doing it. My wife even commented on the way home (at 8:00 last night) that she can tell how happy I am when I am on the water. I guess it just reminds me of really happy times. I am trying to pass these memories on to my sons and teach them boating skills and how to fish (not doing too well on the fishing part). I envy you folks that live down there, I hope you all know how blessed you are. My 7 year old swears he is going to be a rich dentist when he grows up (not sure where that came from) and says he will only work 4 days a week and he and I will fish the rest of the week. Boy I sure hope so!
Right now I have so many “Honey Do” crap its a pain.I told the Boss today I am going fishing.I don’t care if the mulch needs to be put out.I can’t cut the back acre due to its wet.Just got the new dock about ready and i will fish now.Need one more light put up and that’s it.Will fill up my bait pens this week.Should be on the water by Wed.![]()

I think sometimes you need a change of scenery. Since you are stonoman, you probably fish in the stono river all the time. Go put in somewhere else, or take a little adventure in the ocean. Go find new spots and try to catch something else.
There are many with no boat that would love to get out on the water. Post in the fishing match ups that way you can work out gas and someone to help clean up afterwards. If the garma’s not there he doesn’t go another trip. Or all you old retired people should get together with some buckets, straw hats, cooler of beer and fish from the bank.
Stonoman - I can see your new dock from my back deck in Stono Ferry. It looks real nice. I hear you on not getting fired up for a fishing trip. I think it’s the heat for me this time of the year. Even early in the am there’s not much of a break when the humidity is 90% and little wind. I’m already looking forward to October.
Try targeting new species and/or new area. Something different peaks my interest. Try Tarpon fishing. You get the ocean breeze and catching one here is quite a challenge, although all the sharks can be a PIA.
Tailers(OTF of cours), topwater(any fish), and Tarpon never get old for me, and hope they never do. If they do, I’ll move to Montana.
Soaking bait in the waterway can get old, especially in the blazing heat
