They’re normally in season from may to august.

Today we basically took male crabs and put them into the pots where the bait usually goes(daddy had baited the pots last week so today we culled and saved jimmys for the pots to catch peelers. You close the escape rings as shedding or “peeler” crabs have no size limit in what you can keep like regular crabs do…and you put a couple males inside the pot and one in the bait holder…the females go to them…it’s crab pimping of sorts…we saw signs of shedders today ( the females flap underneath turns a deep pink, purple color right before they back out of their shells… so it usually will happen pretty quickly.
XI didn’t know half of the pots out there and you could walk pot to pot. There are some crabbers who move area to area as the crabs do…so they will move as the peelers show area to area.
I saw a huge Carolina skiff with what looked like a hundred pots on it turn into buckhall…it’s a crazy season…and every year it seems people get more dishonest unfortunately
. Daddy lost pots and crabs last year…and today his friend Charles said he is already missing a few pots. New pots and he and we had some pots that were empty of their jimmies. DNR do what they can…but it’s tough to watch so large of areas…and thiefs know this.

Will post some pic later today

Sc slim…we usually start seeing them anywhere from the end of March to early April and they will run for a few weeks…hopefully.

Daddy says usually when the water temp hits about 68 they start. …today it was 65 and 66 most places we were.
Once they start showing…say when they show in beufort …it’s just a matter of days before the process works it’s way on down the coast. To us with the warming water.
I love "peeler"season as that’s how I get paid  yummmmmm
Still. Waiting for pot puller parts so I was the pot puller today…63 of them.

Thanks Pen.

As for clitterclatter, the rookie should probably stay within his breadth of knowledge and leave the heavy lifting to the professional. Doubt he could pull 63 pots!

Penny, with the escape rings closed, does that mean the females can get in through the wire mesh? I know they are very floppy without their shells. Thanks! Sorry if thats a dum question, just trying to learn something

I’m ready to go wet some pots! Hell…I’m ready for just about anything involving a boat, at this point!

They come in through the doors like they usually do. The escape rings are closed off so they can’t leave. Most “peelers” are the smaller ones and if the rings were left open they would scoot back out. Basically all that we do is fold the wire back down through the middle to close it. I will try to post pics I took tommorow. Had a blast and brought home fresh flounder and a half a bushel of regular crabs in pay.
