Jabez 1-17

Got to post quick as I am late for birthday party. Went down south and started around the 650 line in 75 feet of water. Caght plenty of seabass and silver snapper. Had a hard time getting any big fish to bite today. We caught a short scamp and a gag @15lbs. Lots of small rudder fish and some other odds and ends. Oh dont forget the sharpnose. A few of them and a few throw back Reds. The weather finally layed out to slick calm this evening and we had a great ride in. Will post some pics and do a better report tomorrow.

It wasnt the best fishig day on the ocean for me yesterday but is was the coldest. I had spray freezing ont he covering boards on the way down the river in the am. Went to Tolers to pick some people up and left out around 9. Was a little bit windier then I had thought but a good ride none the less. Water temp was 60 in 75’ where we started. The fish marked great but the bigfish bite was really slow. Finally after about an hour caught the one gag of the day. There were plenty of bass, but none of the magnums. Loads of silver snapper and even some vermillions. Worked out and further south. Made it out to about 100 feet and the rudder fish were so thick thats all we could catch. Kind of a shame because I marked some really nice fish on that ledge. I realized that I dont have any fish pictures since there was a professional on board. Brian Carroll rode with us and took several pictures. I guess he will post the link when he gets them on the web. I did however get a shot of fish finder. It shows a nice ledge with a good mark of fish on it. Glad that the weather brooke long enuff for us to go fishing. Hadnt been out in quite a while.

Jabez,
What was your DF range set at in this picture. Is this an example of a pretty hard bottom with low relief?Or is this a 10’ ledge? You were marking some awesome fish there is no doupt about that.

30 foot range. Each dash on the right is 2’. The ledge is about 6’-8’. These are the Ray Charles spots not always the best to fish because they are easily found/noticed by others. Some of the best spots to fish barely mark on the sounder.

HA!!! Yes I agree that even someone with not much experience reading depth finders such as myself would definitely stop and drop on something as awesome looking as this. Thanks for the help. If you can think of other examples feel free to post them or send them to me directly as I am always eager to learn more.
Thanks
Don

What did you pull off the bottom over that mark? My guess is a lot of b-liners???

I think they were to shallow for many B-liners. That mark looks like grunts or bsb’s. The large marks to the side say grouper or rudderfish or Snappers. The “A” scope is showing a “soft” return from small fish…IMO.

very nice screen shot.

Phin would tell you that they are red snapper. I guess that they are rudder fish… But, I am hoping that Phin can tell me what species that big solo one is just right of center on the bottom.

Either way Jabez, when are you going to let me dive on that spot?

2 pts for you sells, -2 for me not looking at the water depth. If the depth was 115ft I think I would have been awarded 2 points.

I had pulled in the anchor and this spot was on our way home. Just made 2 drifts. Didnt fish here long but was mainly seabass. They were following the one hooked up to the surface. I was surprised at the amount of beeliners we caught inside of 100 foot though. Had a handful at 75 and more out about 95.

Here is a photo of our grouper from last saturday. Brian Carroll took the picture. He offers his photography services to anyone that wishes to hire him.
