They don’t. But if you see some don’t tell anyone
when the bait gets here and the water warms up in the 80’s. Hard to see them on top anymore. They are here, just don’t see them on top as often. Too much boat traffic and pressure on them. Best bet is to catch some menhaden and anchor behind Castle Pinckney right on the edge of the channel and wait. Behind Drum Island is good too.
Oh they definitely show up here. As RWL stated, need water above(closer to mid/high) 80s. Caught a few dozen small ones last year inshore. Have seen them on top around several places in Charleston. Caught this bad boy on a Shimano Orca Popper while in my buddy’s boat. 32lbs and was quite the fight. Also found him one that was a tad smaller.

Nice fish! I miss the days of going out in the summer after a thunderstorm, when it slicked off, and chasing schools of Jacks! Just so much boat traffic now! We caught many over 30 on 8lb tackle. It is a LONG fight!
These fish are certainly a treat to catch! Looking forward to them coming back!
