James Island campground

I am dragging to the family down to james island campground in a few weeks. Has anyone stayed there before? I see on their “map” that there is a fishing dock there. I am thinking of dragging down a little 14ft jon boat with a little 7.5hp johnson on it. does anyone know if i’d be able to drag it down to the dock or if there is a ramp close by i could use? Id like to do some creek/river fishing rather than dragging my big boat down and heading offshore.

Public pier at Demetre Park on James Island is always convenient.

Pretty certain there’s no launch at JICP, closest is Elliot Cut (Plymouth Landing) or Sol Legare. Next closest are Wappoo and Folly, larger landings. Recommend Plymouth landing, its closest, has a fire station there that makes it one of the safer in terms of leaving truck/trailer, but be prepared for strong current through Elliot cut getting into the Stono. Second recommendation would be Folly.

Since you’re there, be prepared to throw worms or spinners in the ponds at the county park, plenty of small and medium bass in many of them. Been years, but crabbing used to be good off their saltwater dock

Great park/campground. We live in Charleston and still go there. You can’t drag a Jon boat and launch it off the dock. Elliot Cut ramp is closest but I wouldn’t under any circumstances launch a Jon boat with 7.5 hp engine from it. The current there is vicious. Sol Legare would be a good bet and there is fishable area all around there.

Yeah I’m thinking of putting in at sol legare.

The more I think about it though, the more I don’t think the Jon boat is going to do so good out there so I’m prolly just going to bring the fishing boat down and head out to the reefs. I was just hoping to try some crabbing and shrimping like I used to as a kid. But like you said, I can prolly get some crabs off their dock

We will be camping there the 23rd-25th. First time camping there, but it seems to get great reports from everyone I’ve asked.

yeah its my first time going there as well. It does look like a pretty exciting place, especially for the kiddos. we are going october 14th - 16th

I might have an extra trailer you can borrow so you can roll your boats around. All this dragging may mess up the bottom of your boat.
:smiley::wink:

i figured if i drove fast enough, it would start to take flight, so hopefully it wont mess the bottom up too much
