James Island launch spots??

I am trying to get into kayak fishing, and would like to be able to put in somewhere near my house. Preferably somewhere that is not a major landing. Anybody know any spots? I live off of Fort Johnson Rd?

Pay $1-2 and launch at Crosby’s or Bowen’s. Launch for free at Sol Legare ramp for the Stono- not busy usually. Small ramp at Mosquito Beach on Sol Legare Rd if you want to fish King’s Flat’s. Used to be able to use small ramp at Mariner’s Cay- don’t know if still feasible with new management.

Thanks for the info

Sunrise Park is another good spot for the Harbor.

I used to put in at the end of Riley Rd. on James Island every now and then. I cought a handfull of reds, trout, blues and flounder during the first few hours of a rising tide. The fishing isn’t fantastic but that creek system is a lot of fun to paddle around in and too narrow and shallow for boats.

Thanks, those are two great suggestions. That brings me to another question I have. Can I launch at any spot that is public property? Are there any rules (written or otherwise) that would prevent me from walking a couple of feet through marsh grass to get to an accessible creek on public property?

I am confused about what you mean walking through marsh grass … as long as your not creating a lot of damage you should be fine. As a rule of thumb if I want to fish a certain spot of water I find a way to get there. I had a lot of good days on Shem Creek last year I know thats a ways from Fort Johnson but the day I had were well worth the drive.

Whenever I’m fishing little creeks like that, I try to go on a rising tide. Trying to get back to the road in thigh-deep pluff mud while dragging a yak is no fun. Plus it’s hard to say how fast the current will during the ebb tide. I’d be careful whose private property you walk by- thus far, a nice wave and a comment about the weather have been enough to keep anyone from getting their shotguns out.

That is sage advice Carl about the rising tide, thanks. Hurricane, to be more specific, there is a spot in my neighborhood at the end of a public road that has public access to the creek. There is no landing there, but you can see where people have made a path through the grass to get to the water.

The problem is, I have heard from my neighbors that the guy who owns the property adjacent to that spot does NOT like people back there and can get aggressive about it.

I have done my homework (checked tax map and plat and even consulted an environmental lawyer friend) and it’s all public land and I am allowed to launch my yak there. I’m a pretty non-confrontational person, especially when fishing. Any thoughts on how to handle the situation?
I wanted to introduce myself and let him know I would be back there from time to time. Friends tell me not to, b/c that would just give him a reason to think he could tell me no. Thoughts?

I mean the worst he can do is giving you a hard time about it. If he gets aggressive call the police, thats what you pay taxes for, if you want I will go with ya one day, let it get a lil warmer though my yak is a ride-on-top … One of my friends calls it renegade fishing if there is any chance someone will get fired up over it … People take life way to serious, get angry over some pluff mud
