January Bait

My understanding is that Lake World will be closed the month of January. Since we have been getting our bait there and then driving to our boat at Light House Marina, what other options do we have of getting bait during January?

if you call David in advance he will meet you at Larry Koons ramp. That is if you plan to fish around the mid lake area and up.

The PDQ in between chapin and Ballentine has a sign for herring outside. Don’t know if they have it or not but that will be your closest place. Ned has shut his doors till mid march.

He had people saying there would show up and they never did. He had Carolyn there early Sat morning cause people said they would get bait from them. I showed up Sunday and I was their 1st customer of the weekend…

If PDQ doesn’t have it u may be out of luck for close drive. Would have to drive to meeting street, davids, or hope George is at dreher…or start keeping it at home…

Too bad there’s not more options, but thanks for the info. Gives something to work with if we can catch some decent days in January while the lake is filling back up. We could always work with artificials for a month.

If you think about the expense of driving to Georgia to get the herring, there probably isn’t a lot of profit at $6 per dozen. Maybe $2 or $3 per dozen profit. So for David to drive his truck with the bait boat on it from his house to Koon would probably cost him $10 plus his time. I wouldn’t do it unless I thought I was going to sell at least 20 dozen. As far as being rude, that is not justifiable. But I have been getting bait from David for a few years and he has always been nice.

You can get large shinners from Lake Murray Hardware in Ballentine I have used them for stripers a lot in the past and had good results.

O and that new bait shop at the corner of 378 and shore rd finally got herring in. No word on when their big gizzards are supposed to come. The boys that run the bait shop in Hartwell are supplying them…not gonna say their price on here but they are selling by the dz or half dz…:stuck_out_tongue:…they told me these were “cold” water herring not the same kind everyone else sells…[:0]

David has always been willing to help. I am certainly surprised by what happened to scgmc. I find it hard to believe. I have been getting bait from him for the last 2 winters. He will always meet me at Koons with a great attitude, no problems at all. I have agreed (and feel is the right thing to do) that I will pay him no less than 20 bucks (whether I keep 1 or 4 dz of herring or shad) for all his time, gas, etc. Most of the time I am the only one he comes for!! He charges $5/doz to MSC members. Since I keep my boat on the water, if it was not for him, my fishiing during the winter will be drastically reduced.

I did a little checking around this afternoon. I stopped in the PDQ at the corner 76 and Wessinger. They were out of herring. She also said their supplier was on vacation so she wasn't sure when they would have a consistent supply. I also stopped into Lake Murray hardware in Ballentine. (great folks by the way. I shop there a lot)As striperswiper stated, they have large shiners. The guy said they get a delivery every Thursday and consistently have them to sell. $6.50 a dozen but with shiners you don't have to worry about dead loss and they keep for days in an aerated bucket. They don't open until 8am and they are closed on Sunday so plan ahead but that may be your best bet in your situation.

@SCGMC - You may want to give Shad a try … my hit ratios this year are better than 3 to 1 in favor of Shad over Herring when I’m running both in my spreads …

I’ve also never had an issue with dealing with David, although I have never had occasion to “request” his appearance, I have used him (for no particular reason) at the dam during the summer and I have frequented his house on several occasions this Fall/Winter …

I was, however, unaware that he gave reduced rates to MSC members so I’ve been paying full freight this whole time, but no worries …

I’d give him another chance and I’d definitely give Shad a shot, too

Is anyone selling shad locally now that Ned is closed?

100 percent David supporter. Good member of MSC for many years. Available to all of us 7days a week rain or shine. All year round . Try to do what he and the other good bait people on this lake do . We are indepted to them ALL for what they do. Enough of my rant although I could say much much more about this issue. I do find it offensive the things said on this thread about a fellow member of MSC I live on the lake in Chapin. It’s a 16 mile round trip to George;s for bait .2 five gal buckets with a bubbler 3 doz
lx herring in each .rarly lose a bait. Have a 40 gal Ron vest on board . George would meet people at Billy D if it were more then 1 boat and you were a decent customer. All year round 7days a week.pardon my spelling after all I’m almost 75 yrs old.

TOM GITTO

I could not agree with Tom Gitto more! David has met me at Koon and Acapulco, with a call ahead. I always buy more bait than I think I need, but would not even consider asking him to meet me at a ramp, for my convenience, for 2-3 dozen baits! He will tell you when you call, if he is meeting other boats, if that is the case, and I only needed 3 dozen baits, that would be fine with him.

I, personally, think it is unreasonableable to ask him to meet you at a ramp, for your convenience, to sell 2-3 dozen baits, if you are the only boat wanting bait. Think about it from his perspective, this is a business. Would you drive to a ramp to meet one boat to sell $15 to $20 worth of bait? I would not!

@scgmc: I’m not questioning your report, I hope you did not take it that way. I just find it difficult to believe David would act like that ! All I say is that David is a great guy to deal with! I don’t know of anyone that will take the time to meet only one customer at a ramp! He has done it for me countless times! You need to talk to the guy before posting a bad report quite openly like you have done. He is well known to a lot of us, the image you are trying to portrait of him is not right!

I too am 100% for David! He’s the most dependable baitman around and a helluva guy! Having worked with him for a couple of summers, I know how tough and annoying his job can be. Still, he comes through with results time after time. Not only is David my primary bait supplier, he is a good friend that will help in any reasonable way. It does hurt to see him portrayed in that light on a public forum.

I can tell you that he had been feeling under the weather for a long period of time. I know I can be hard to deal with when sick. We all have our moments. Before going off on a message board, I try to seek understanding first. That’s why I waited 6 hours to reply to this thread. Like all of us, David has his own peculiar ways. His job is tough! However, if you’ve burned the bridge, you’re missing out in multiple ways.

David, if you read this thread, know that you are appreciated as both a baitman and friend by the majority!

I respect what you guys are saying about your friend and fellow MSC member, so I have deleted my posts in regards to him. You’re welcome to do the same. I apologize for taking the thread in a direction so many found objectionable. I was replying to an earlier post that a particular bait dealer would meet you at a landing if called. As I originally wrote, it never was meant to bash anyone but more to provide my real life experience that I was never able to get this person to meet me and maybe others would have a hard time as well. I should have stuck to the original subject matter “January Bait” and for not doing that I’m sorry. In the future, I will keep my opinions about others, whether favorable or unfavorable, to myself.
