January MSC Tourney

Congrats to all who weighed in fish today. Apparently I should’ve not turned right out of Acapulco and instead turned left. Oh well, until next month.

We turned right and caught our 2 fish. Not big, but big enough to weigh. Nobody killed them today, although there were a bunch of fish caught.

My sincere wish is that Team Stoneage would have got their fish that they lost…3 times…

Mike, I was wondering why you didn’t turn left based on your results earlier in the week.

What happened with Stoneage Charles? I missed that story. I know they had one of the top weights. We didn’t stay until the end due to only having 14 pounds and wanting to get Rick K’s boat back to his dock across the lake to get home at a decent hour.

I certainly don’t want to speak for them, but the basic story is that they broke off a very large fish. The fish went down, but came back to the surface and stayed on top of the water. Rick got within a few feet of the fish and went to dip her, but she went down. Then came back up and rolled over. Rick got very close again and was about to dip her up when a bass boat came by and put her back down for good. Cool, but heartbreaking story.

Big fish break more than just your line…

That is both wild and gut-wrenching! I’m sure we’ll hear from them at some point.

Fogman, after Friday prefish we couldn’t get any good bites forks to Ramp 4 and spinners cove. When we went to fish between the shallows outside buffalo creek we marked a lot of fish, lost a monster and boated some nice ones so that’s where we started. We went down to Dreher and a cove in Crystal after not having any success outside buffalo in the morning. Saw fish being caught outside Frayed Knot and spent time there and by the time we got back to our starting spot we only had just over an hour to fish, again marking good fish in 30’ and decided to spend the rest of the day with 4 down rods, 2 planers and a couple free lines. Hooked into a few at the end but just too short to weigh in. I wish I would’ve went to the river but anticipating it being flooded with boats and knowing I haven’t had an overall success except for Wednesday afternoon there in a month I decided it probably wouldn’t produce. Apparently I was wrong. Live and learn. This is the first time I’ve ever been serious about learning the pattern and movement of stripers. I’m learning every trip and hoping to have a better February. I’m a very competitive person so failing is hard on me but you gotta fail to get better and learn.

Good attitude Mike! I took my share of lumps when I was younger and still do from time-to-time. The learning in this game never stops… I was surprised at the few boats we saw upriver.

Charles did a pretty good job giving the short version …

At the risk of hijacking the thread, basically our day went something like this …

We got out there really early anticipating the 120 plus boats that would be out TX fishing …

So we got to our first spot about 45 minutes early and spot locked to setup …

As we’re waiting we started marking fish … mind you - we’re spot locked right now so these fish are swimming right under the boat …

Plus, despite the fog, we can only see one other striper boat in the entire area and it was fishing the Striper Kings TX …

So we’re feeling pretty good about things … as long as they want to eat …

7:00 hits and we put lines in … the first 7+ pounder comes on the third rod out on my side …

Usually this is a bad sign for us because every time we boat one right off it’s typically a long day …

We’re going along and as I swing my boards across a shallow flat my inside board goes off and so I grab that rod and start working the fish …

What I didn’t realize is that I bumped the trolling motor remote and by the time I looked up we were in less that 2 foot of water … as I corrected the trolling motor the fish I was working broke off - probably on the bottom … and then the trolling motor ran aground …

Usually we draft about 18" but with the 50 gallon bait tank on the bow we’re front heavy … So I stopped the TM and ran up front and pushed us off with the landing net and then lifted the TM just enough to clear the ground and started it back up again to clear the flat we were stuck on …

As we’re clearing the flat the way back float line goes off and Liz grabs that rod and starts working the fish … I can tell when she’s on a good fish because she doesn’t talk, so I’m getting things ready to help her

Heartbreaker for sure, tournament or not. Those bass look like good bait

Good read Law. That sucks about the fish. I just wanted to weigh in 2 fish no matter the weight. We got a lot of work to do before February.

Thanks for the account Rick! You two fish hard and deserved that fish; so I’m really sorry that happened.

Mike, it’ll happen for you. Just stay the course and keep after it. Stay in touch and know I’m willing to help.

There were some good fish caught around buffalo and the elbow Saturday. My biggest was right at 9 pounds and had that were short around 18 - 20 inches. I fished Crystal lake Friday with no luck then moved up the and trolled about a mile below the split to Big Man's picking up shorts so I gambled and went to Buffalo Saturday morning. I was doing pretty good for the first hour and then they moved out. Marked a lot of fish in the elbow but couldn't get them to chew. 13 rods total I had out but not a taker in the elbow. Saw a lot of boats but not any catching. Went just above the elbow in the first neck and there were fish there but I ran out of time. It was a difficult day to say the least with 7 boats in Striper Kings weighing zero to 6 pounds.

I’m gonna have to go check out some of my old stomping grounds. Sounds like I didn’t miss much fun Saturday

As we’re clearing the flat the way back float lin

Well buddy, that’s an interesting take and poses some interesting issues. I know on the BASS circuit dip nets were not allowed. In striper fishing, dip nets or bogas are a must have. How many times have I had a fish come unhooked in the dip net over the years? Too many to recall. Did I catch those fish with hook and line or the dip net? In the way we fish, I guess it’s the use of the hook, line, rod, and reel to initiate the catching of the fish and use of the net, boga, or gaff to complete it.

In what has been described, the fish was apparently hooked to Liz’s line that was tangled in brush on the bottom. It was not simply a dying fish floating on the surface. Her tackle initiated the catching of the fish. Therefore, if it was successfully netted, I would say good catch. Otherwise, we would need an official on each boat to determine if a fish stayed hooked until it hit the deck-- impossible for most striper tournaments.
