Took Jayden One on its inaugural 2009 voyage. Seas were not as originally forecasted. Took out 3 buddies, 2 that have never been on the ocean, 1 of which has never caught a fish in his life (23 yrs old), and the other has only taken a few private charters from Murrells Inlet in his time. I was met with a beautiful ocean after passing thru the jetties and that’s where it ended. Marched my way out to Y-73 to be greeted with 4-5 ft seas with very short intervals. Couldn’t get on the fish I was targeting and was tired of being tossed around. Contemplated about going back to Fredricks reef and making a short day of it. Ended up going to 75’ on the 150 line from Charleston 60. Did a bunch of drifting picking up about 100-150 BSB. Most all were small. Only fished for a couple hours there. Ended day with 18 boxed BSB and an Atlantic Sharpnose. Buddies insisted on keeping it and wanted to try and eat it.
Got some fish to clean tomorrow and a boat to scrub down. Sorry for no pics but I didn’t bring the camera. Took pictures with my phone but they didn’t save for some reason. May be b/c I had no service?
Took these today before cleaning fish. The filet knife in the photo is one seen on TV and got it with a set at the Sportsmans Classic. This filet knife was too good for skills. When I hit the backbone I had already cut through it on a few of them. Cut into wooden filet table 36 times and never sharpened it.
Why didn’t it say that in the DNR book. Said 1 per person in Fed Waters and 2 per person in state waters… I would never keep anything illegaly…
Edit: Just checked SCDNR website and see where it states it clearly. Thanks for the info and will make sure I either get a permit OR let them swim away next time. Never ate shark before so we’ll see which one it is. Heard different taste stories from different people. Some love it, some don’t care for it.

You have one on the boat. I am sure you just forgot which bag it was in.
I will not get into a battle of wits with a man who is completely unarmed!
Fried shark is probably one of my favorites to eat. Not the best for you because of all the mercury in it but still delicious. I also like to grill shark steaks but still like it fried better.
I’m the weird guy who thinks fried fish is better than any other style. If I fry it, I pretty much like it…Other ways just aren’t my thing unless it’s tuna sushi
Fried up the shark tonight. Didn’t care for it. Right when I bit into it I could taste the way it smelled and that just didn’t work for me. After the first bite in it tasted fine. My 16 y.o. niece loved it. “To each their own”… I would keep again for fish fry’s…
Sharks also contain urea. It helps them regulate the salt in their bodies or something and if you don’t gut them almost immediately the urea will turn and cause the shark to smell like a wet diaper/ammonia combination.
Any time you keep a shark it is VERY IMPORTANT to gut them ASAP. That also helps them cool faster.
nice, sharks are good eatn as long as they are blacktip, mako under 180llbs … either way, u got to gut them soonest,… marinate them in OJ overnight and they taste yummy
Cracker that sounds tastey, where can I find that recipe? Tastes about like what the shark did the other night. Guess when you eat most any other fish with BSB it isn’t going to taste as good.
