JB Charleston/West Ashley (No Boat)

I’ve lived here for about 3 years but have worked graves the entirety of it sadly. I was strictly a weekend fisher but I don’t think I’m getting my fix, the only dilemma is that the only trusted spots I know of are on the surf. I’m trying to find somewhere a little closer to the base to fish after work. I’m all ears if anyone has any recommendations.

My suggestion is to look at Google Earth. After you find some areas that look promising or look like somewhere you can access by foot, find the same area in Bing Maps using Bird’s Eye View (better picture than Google Earth).

Other potential common areas are:

  • Around quite a few bridges
  • Mt. Pleasant Fishing Pier
  • Shem Creek Fishing Pier
  • New Fishing pier on SC 7 and the Ashley
  • County Parks
  • Noisette waterfront park
  • The Battery
  • Brittle Bank
  • Instead of fishing the surf, go to the inlet and keep walking and walking and walking till you are on the backside of the island. Or just focus on the inlet.

I took a $200 8 ft walmart kayak on vacation two weeks ago just north of here and put a hurting on the flounder. That’s another option.

Find a buddy with a boat. That’s a better option.

If I am limited to shore based spots, I try to fish them differently than the general population. I either get my dive boots or my muck boots out. If everyone fishes off the top of the pier/bridge, I fish under the pier/bridge. If everyone fishes from one particular corner of the bridge because the others are muddy, I don the muck boots, get dirty and fish the other three locations. If the bottom is hard enough I wade out and cast back to the bank while everyone on the bank is casting out to deep water, and so on…

Good luck

I’ve tried using google maps, but haven’t had much luck the past 3 weeks. I appreciate the bing tip though, hopefully it will give me a little more of an edge. What areas do you typically have luck at out of the ones you’ve mentioned?

The only one I ever fished with any regularity was the creek at at the North Charleston Waterfront Park. I don’t fish off the pier. I wade out and fish the mouth of the creek on the incoming tide. Muddy and plenty of snags but I have caught trout, reds and flounder on artificial baits.

The rocks at that park seem to hold decent sized sheepshead at high tide. Look for them off the wooden walkway near the concrete pier to start. They’re along the entire length but it’s easier to see them there. I’ve never fished for them, but they were there last week cruising the rocks.

go to the match up section. many on here will take you with them. I’ve fished with some reel seedy characters on this site. child molesters, hardcore alocholics, meth heads. on second thought, just stick to land fishin by yourself.

If you have base access…
Go to the Outdoor Adventure Center on redbank
Buy a base fishing pass $7
They will give you all the info you need including locations.

I do have base access, we’ve gone a few times and I’ve had surprisingly good luck with the reds. I actually just went yesterday but came back empty handed. Anyone know of any decent flounder spots?

Care to share the handles of these characters, to avoid them of course…unless you’re into that sort of thing.

Your standing in the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow looking for another rainbow.
Grass doesnt get any greener.

If you left empty handed your doing it wrong. I went Sat pulled 6 reds (2 slot, all others 30+"), 5 trout (all keepers) and 2 keeper sheepshead. I’m not sure what your looking for but you are already fishing the best spots (from shore) around.

There are good flounder spots too. I’m not going to post them on a public forum, but they arent big secrets either.

Take the time to learn the details of the spots. Dont just throw a line out and wait. Work the structure, think about how the water errodes the bottom. Take your hook off and just throw a 2oz sinker working the bottom. Feel out where the rocks are, where the sand is, where the holes/drop offs are. Dont go to a pier and cast out into no-mans land. The fish are under your feet.

Talk to the guys fishing out there. There are some who have been fishing that area 50+ years.

dam that’s good. i’ll footnote you when I use that.

Well now, i’m not saying the area is bad for fishing at all. I’ve had my best fishing while being stationed in Charleston.

I’m only looking for holes closer to the Air Force base to fish after work. The concept of getting off and going to a trusted hole I don’t have to drive 30 minutes to and coming back with dinner sounds great.

Really though, please feel free to give me tips because i’m befuddled you have never come back empty handed.

If these flounder spots are accessible by foot would you mind sending them in a pm.

I appreciate the tips but I am confident in my ability to fish the bottom, this isn’t my first time.

Have you tried fishing the wharfs? Never know what your gonna catch. We caught a 10lb blue cat, came 10ft off the bottom to hit a menhaden. We’ve caught trout, reds and flounder there
