Jetties 5-20-14

Ran out to the jetties with Charlestonfishing.com user Sc-shark and some friends, and got there around 9am. Caught a few whiting off shrimp and small black sea bass(not even three inches long) off fiddlers and shrimp. Cut the whiting in half and put it back out as bait, and caught this redfish weighing 30lbs. At one point it managed to swim over the jetty, fought it back to our side, and we boated it after about ten minutes. The fish was released and swam happily away. Switched spots after awhile, caught more whiting, black sea bass, and a 3 ft. shark.

had a good time… nice redfish … with a boat load of whiting…few upset boats around as we landed fish left and right(small but still fish) will admit someone landed a very nice sheephead early and i got jelly… congrats to whoever he was.

still cant believe we got him back over the jetty’s without pulling anchor and not breaking the line. oh yea… didn’t get a length but weight was 31.3lbs on the digital bogo (2 times) 31.3 was lowest number 33.0 was highest… so i went with lowest.

few pics i snapped while fushgrinder went cobia hunting with 0 success… the clarity is crap but i give the man BIG props for trying.

few pics i snapped…

actually not a single one lol…

but really they are everywhere… i think at any given moment you could look down and see at least 5 with a quick scan.

What is the visibility like out there?

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.

visibility from boat was probably 5 feet. (south jetty) outside the inside of south jetty was a washing machine for clarity.

fushgrinder can chime in a bit more on the clarity… but i recall him telling the other guy to basically pretend he was hip firing… he also said when doing free dives he would see jelly balls right at his head almost but couldn’t see much past that.
he tried at least 6 free dives in different spots trying to get some clarity. even at the buoy’s past the jetties visibility was crap.

Yeah, there were jelly balls everywhere, I kept getting hit in the side of the head by them. The visibility was about 2 feet mid tide and got to 3 ft at high tide. Still trying to figure out the right conditions to get better visibility…

we were out there yesterday as well. couldnt catch a cold. Nice red. my highlight of the day was seeing a 6 ft plus leatherback (my first) feasting on the thousands of jelly balls

I think we saw that turtle also! It was awesome!

so you were on the outside of the south jetty as well lol… it was sweet to see a turtle to bad he wasn’t photogenic… as soon as it was spotted it was gone.

Nice fish, we were anchored on the other side of the south jetty from you for awhile. Hit up a couple spots on both sides ended up with whiting, small black sea bass, sharks, rays, and one really nice pompano. Was my first trip out to the jetties saw a lot of people out there but didn’t see many catching, nice to see you got a big red.

nice… that polar was a nice rig… you switched sides as we headed home.

thanks man, your side of the jetty looked calmer but by the time we made it over the tide had turned and we bounced around pretty good. The pompano ate a piece of shrimp on the bottom we were hoping that he had some friends around but only found the one we found him about 100 yards seaward of dynamite hole on the south side

up till about 1 the outside of the south jetty’s was calm… the inside was like a washing machine… we had started inside south around 9am… work our way to the tip and decided to run the outside.

if i was a bit smarter i would have live baited a few of those whiting and tried for a spanish or king. never crossed my mind i got to the point i was trying to pop them off beside the boat.

seemed like every cast within 5 minutes i had a bite… if i didn’t the line was tangled or bait was taken.
