I am going to be upgrading my skiff to a bay boat soon and would like to start fishing the jetties and some of the nearshore reefs on nicer days. I have never fished either and was looking for some advice on tackle to use. I have some 2-3000 size reels I used inshore but obviously realize I will need some bigger ones. What size should I get? Is a 4000 big enough or should I go 5-6000? Also, what line size? Just looking for general tackle recommendations as well such as hook size, type of rigs to use, etc. Thanks in advance for any help!

4000 are nice because you can catch sea bass, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, sharks, etc and then take them the next day and catch redfish, trout, and flounder in the back of a creek. I do like to have at least one 5000-6000 on the boat though for cobia, kings, bull reds etc. As far as line, I would say go power pro braid and go large. I run 30lb on my 4000s and 50lb on my 6000s.

My response exactly, I keep about 3-4 4000’s with 30lb braid and 2 6000’s with 50-60lb braid ready to roll. May want to keep a 9-12000 for when it gets hot incase Mr. Tarpon comes around
Look at where Jesus went to pick people. He didn’t go to the colleges; he got guys off the fishing docks.
Yall are saying about what I was thinking as far as reels go. What about rods? and hooks and leaders, etc. Thanks for the help!

Gamakatsu or Owner circle hooks
2/0 for small baits with 20lb leader
7/0 for large bait with 80lb leader
Carolina rig with 1.5-6oz egg sinkers depending on current and size of bait.
Thanks for the help! Hopefully be able to put it to use this spring when I have a new boat!

What rod specs should I look for? Any specific models yall use that don’t break the bank?

Penn battle II combos are a pretty good bang for your buck.
