Jetties skunk 10/20

Had a coworker come to Chs and beg me to take him fishing. I figured a ‘sure thing’ would be the jetties, if nothing else, at least to let him pull on some sharks.
His flight didn’t get in until noon, so I put the boat in at Shem and caught plenty of finger mullet waiting for him to arrive. High tide was around 2 I believe. We headed out and it was sloppy, with a stiff NE wind forcing us to only be able to fish the outside of the S jetty. fished the outgoing from about 2-5PM
Well, we tried 3 different spots with live mullet on the bottom and caught a total of 1 whiting (he was on a piece of shrimp). No reds, no sharks, and maybe only a single hit on the mullet. Only one other boat out there and he gave us the ‘thumbs down’ when we passed eachother as well.
We fished essentially the same area this past weekend and did well. The biggest difference I can figure is that on Saturday, there were acres and acres of menhaden S of the S jetty. Yesterday, didn’t see any menhaden and no pelis diving on anything.

I fished 9 hours and caught nothing but junk fish yesterday. I wonder what the deal was.

We’ve been under this strong high pressure system for several days
(30.3 in.) and an almost constant NE wind. Those factors can make it difficult to find them biting.

We had basically the same conditions and weather pattern on Sat, fished basically the same area and got 3 reds that day. The biggest difference was that there was no menhaden yesterday while on Sat, they were literally acres of them out there.
My guess is that the reds were following the schools of menhaden and are probably wherever they are now.

Thanks for the tip Jack. Another day of junk fish for me today. Back to work tomorrow. I’ll give it another go this weekend.

A buddy and I fished the jetties 10/21 and caught more black sea bass than we could count. A few dog fish and one slot red. A bad day considering it’s the jetties! Still better than work!
