Dumb question. I have happened upon black drum before. Never on purpose. Got into a slew of em once but never found them again. Any different techniques as opposed to reds (ie: structure, non-structure, bait and such?) Targetable?
Pretty fish and day out there!

Shrimp and crabs are their foods of choice from my experiences. I usually catch them while fishing for something else. That fish was probably the perfect size to keep and eat. I’m always weary of eating them due to the fact I know SOME of them contain worms, especially the larger ones.
That drum ended up being the highlight of the day. Never saw a Sheepshead and talked to another boat out there that experienced the same thing. Everything was setup perfectly minus a sheepshead bite.

We cleaned ours and ate them. Had the big dark blood line through the middle, which some cut out and some enjoy, I guess. I wasn’t crazy for them. I’d just release them but they were fun to catch. I kind of recall using shrimp that day by default because mud minnows were out at the bait shop.
Thanks for the input, Fritz! Sorry the sheepies didn’t cooperate.

Sometimes you’ll find some rocks or other cover where they’ll school up consistently. Used to have a spot where we could always catch several on shrimp or cut mullet. Taste great if cleaned and prepared right.
