Jig Heads

What is your favorite Jig Head? I prefer riptide jig heads, but can not seem to find them lately.

The ones that are on sale!

I started using the redfish jigheads from Bass Pro Shops. I fished the jetties a lot with the trolling motor and the jighead has an extra heavy gold hook on it. It’s stout enough to hold a 40" red, but you can free it with braid and 30# flouro. Straighten it a little and good to go. Also, good for docks or any heavy cover application.

I like the Gamakatsu ones when you can find them. Though the price seems to have gone up. I have also bought some (can’t remember brand) form Academy Sports that I like.

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.

For trolling trout and throwing in grabby areas, I like the inexpensive jigs that used the tinned Eagle Claw hooks, because most of the time I can straighten the hooks and rebend if it gets stuck.

The ball head Gamakatsus are nice, but already mentioned are expensive. Cabelas sells some under there own brand and if not using Gamakatsu hooks, they are very simalar. A pack of 10 is around $5 if my memory is correct.

I use them for about 80% of what I’m throwing. The hooks are very shiny and gets the attention of most inshore species

I think you need to match your jig head weight to the conditions you are trying to fish. Ralph and I only fish 1/4 oz (80% of the time) and 1/8 oz (20% of the time). Its mainly important that the jig reach bottom, but the rate at which the jig falls can really make a difference - especially for a trout trick for example. You will catch fish on a 1/4 oz, but a 1/8 oz makes it fall at just the right rate to be killer.

Anyway I think your question was more about brands. We use Cotee jigs (1/4 oz) because they have a big eye and our feeling is that fish key in on the eye. We buy them in bulk because we go through a lot, which you will do if you are fishing near structure. For TT’s I use the unpainted Gamakatsu 1/8 ball head (if I can find them, which I haven’t been able to recently)

Wall-Mart on James Island had the Gamakatsu’s real cheap the other day, they just started carrying them.

I like slayer’s and mission fishing jig heads. Both are well made, and have different styles for different fishing techniques. Both Haddrells and the CAngler carry both I believe.

I’ll second the Slayers. I started using them down in Florida 6 years ago and have been using them since.
