jig hooks

Is anybody using the hooks from the top of the jig or everybody using them with the hooks on the bottom? I have no problem with them in the top in the salt jigging, but kinda not ready to use it on the stripers.

Anyone wanna tell?

I’ve never had any luck with assist hooks at the top though I’ve only tried them sparingly. The trebles at the bottom of most spoons seem to work just fine even though I’ll occasionally have some fish come unbuttoned.

I have one friend who used a single stinger hook at the top. He did catch some fish rigging that way. He has since started rigging like me, just replacing the standard treble hooks with larger treble hooks. This seems to help keep the larger fish from throwing the hook. I personally like to upsize with red treble hooks. It has been my experience that I seem to get more strikes and hookups using the red hooks. Yes, I know red is one of the first colors to disappear as the water gets deeper, but as long as it seems to work I’ll stick with the red hooks.

When I used to fly fish for steelhead I discovered tying my whoolybuggers with red thread almost doubled my strikes. Not sure if it looks like gills or a wound, but it sure triggered hits.
