Wanting to get some thoughts on jigging. I’m using 50lb PowerPro braid with about 100 yards of 50lb backing. Should I use a mono leader for stretch (6’ or so) or tie my braid straight to the jig? Let’s say it’s a Butterfly jig with 2 hooks.
A leader is standard for me as well as all I jig with. Not so much for the stretch but mono seems more resistant to break/cuts when you get rocked.

I use Florocarbon attached to the braid with an Albright, then attach the jig with a Palomar knot.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I don’t think 6’ of mono will change the stretch all that much. I use a fluoro leader for invisibility, not stretch. Why would you want to add stretch anyway? Lack of stretch is one of the best characteristics of braid IMHO.
That’s my question. If this makes sense - I don’t know what I don’t know. Seems like people have some sort of leader or top shot over Braid for everything else and I was not sure if Jigging should be included. I don’t have any leader right now, just braid straight to the solid ring…no swivel or anything.

For jigging, especially in deeper water, the benefit of braid is the sensitivity that is afforded by its lack of stretch. You will also have a much smaller line diameter relative to break strength so more line will fit on a reel. It also won’t be affected by current as much. You may be able to get away with tying straight to the jig but if the fish are leader shy, it helps to have a clear leader. Fluoro is clearer than mono underwater. I prefer no terminal tackle or swivels too if you’re not having twisting problems. Twisting is more of a problem when trolling or with a spinning reel.
Some folks put mono backing under braid to prevent the braid from slipping on the spool arbor and to fill up space with less expensive line. I use friction tape or cloth backed medical adhesive tape instead of mono backing. I want all the strong braid I can get in case I get that once in a lifetime fish that wants to spool me.
I have 65 lb braid, and I use a long (20’) mono or fluro leader crimped directly to the split ring, so I can change out jigs or hooks very quickly. I use a spider hitch to an albright knot to connect line to leader. Run a full spool of braid on the reel!!! If not, you will never land a wahoo or blackfin. A wahoo will peel off a 300’ topshot in just a few seconds.

Sells - any chance of the leader (crimped) slipping off the split ring through the twisting? Would it be better to the solid ring?

never had one do that. I use the split ring to facilitate quick changes of jigs, poppers, or hooks, you cant do that with a solid ring on there.

I caught a snowy in 600’ on 60’power pro with 15’ of 50’ flouro. We released the jig off of a downrigger clip on an electric reel to save time from getting the jig down. I wish I had never volunteerd to do it though. My arms are still hurting. I could feel the bight clear as day with the braid.
