Johnson 112vr water pump

I have to change the water pump on my 96 Johnson 112 this weekend. Am I going to have any trouble getting to the screw that holds the shift shaft? It looks like the job is not too bad, as long as I don’t have trouble with removing the lower unit bolts. My Clymer’s manual doesn’t say this, but don’t you have to shift into forward or reverse to better get at it? Thanks.

reverse. may have the new style connection where you remove the shift cable, remove a small clevis pin and slide the pivot rod to port to free the shift rod.

i am pretty sure the 96 has the new style shift linkage, but not 100% sure
its a little bit of a pain, but if u have a long 1/4" extension and a swivle socket, its not to bad

Thanks dernflatlander and Chris. I may not get started tomorrow because I am going to liberally apply some penetrating fluid to those lower unit bolts. They will probably need some persuasion. But when I do get started, I sure appreciate the info on the linkage. I’ll take pictures and post them throughout the process.
